As the only remaining founding member of the club, the honour recognises his unwavering dedication and commitment over the past 30 years.
At the age of 93, Mr Verbunt's tireless efforts have left an lasting mark on the Corowa and district region.
Mr Verbunt’s journey to becoming a pillar of the community began when he immigrated to Australia from Holland as a young man in his early twenties. Despite facing the challenge of limited English proficiency, he quickly adapted to his new life in Corowa and embarked on a successful career in the construction industry. Over the years, he ventured across the district, constructing numerous houses and hotels that have shaped the local architectural landscape.
Driven by his deep-rooted desire to give back, Mr Verbunt immersed himself in various volunteer roles. He became an integral part of organisations such as the Lions Club, Rescue Club, and the historical society, where he shared his expertise and passion for community service.
When the Rotary Club decided to establish a Men's Probus Club, Mr Verbunt was among the first to attend the meeting at the old shire office building. He embraced the Probus ethos wholeheartedly, fostering camaraderie and friendship among its members.
His exceptional leadership skills were recognised when he assumed the role of club president, a position he fulfilled with great enthusiasm and joy. His inclusive and friendly nature endeared him to everyone he met, making him a beloved figure within the club.
Barry Simpfendorfer, a close friend and fellow Probus club member, spoke fondly of Mr Verbunt, acknowledging his immense contributions.
He highlighted Mr Verbunt’s humble beginnings and remarkable journey, describing how he built a successful business and dedicated his spare time to the betterment of Corowa.
“When it was his turn to be president of the Probus Club, he did a great job enjoying every minute of it,” he said.
“Ad did it his style and was friends with everyone. Our longest serving probus member. Well done.”
