Benalla will take an active part in connection with Australia Day, which falls on Friday, 30th (of July).
The programme to be observed will be the presentation of the usual collections in the town and outlying parts and the holding of a patriotic meeting in the shire hall in the evening, when collections will also be taken up.
Definite details have not been made, and it is possible that the programme may be elaborated.
Those who have the matter in hand may be trusted to exercise the greatest energy in the matter, and it is safe to say that the wounded and sick Australian soldiers will benefit considerably by their laudable efforts.
As advertised elsewhere, the Yarrawonga people are holding a monster fancy dress procession and carnival on Australia Day (Friday, July 30), the proceeds to go towards the fund for the Australian wounded and sick soldiers.
The greatest enthusiasm prevails amongst those responsible for the carrying out of the function, and, given fair weather, Australia Day promises to bring a record crowd to Yarrawonga.
For the convenience of people between that town and Benalla, a special train has been arranged for.
This will leave Benalla at 9am reaching Yarrawonga about 10.45am, and returning at 6pm, giving everyone an opportunity to reach home in good time.
The attractions in the procession (for which elaborate preparations are being made), and on the ground, will be numerous and entertaining.
Amongst the special groups arranged for the procession are Kitchener’s Army, the Australian Navy, Flags of the Allies, etc.
Several teams have been already selected for the tug of war, while firemen, bandsmen, and members of other public and sporting bodies are keenly competing with each other in their efforts to make a huge success of the carnival.
