Gannawarra residents reminded to check before clearing native vegetation

Residents of Gannawarra Shire are being urged by council to seek advice before clearing, destroying or lopping native vegetation on their property.

Under Victoria’s Planning and Environmental Act 1987 and the Gannawarra Planning Scheme, a planning permit is often required for projects involving the removal, destruction or lopping of native vegetation, including clearing fence lines, creating access tracks and undertaking earthworks.

Gannawarra Shire Council chief executive Geoff Rollinson said that while most residents did the right thing, many were unaware of the rules about the removal of native plants.

“Native vegetation is one of Gannawarra's greatest environmental assets. It provides habitat for our unique wildlife, supports healthy ecosystems and contributes to the rural landscapes that make our shire such a special place to live and work,” Mr Rollinson said.

“Council is committed to protecting native vegetation while supporting landowners to understand and meet their planning obligations.

“Contacting council before commencing works can provide clarity, save time and help avoid potential penalties.”
