It was his eagle on the Par 5, 15 th hole on the Mauna Lani north and south course which propelled him to the front by one stroke, a lead maintained for the remaining three holes.
Gordon had a six-under par 66, after his first two rounds of four under and five under, to overtake and beat New Zealander Josh Geary by one shot.
Geary’s rounds were seven under, three under and four under to finish second.
That putt meant an eagle and James Gordon taking the lead in the Hawaii Pro Am Team Invitation in the final round.
Some 60-plus professionals from America, New Zealand and Australia competed on the amazing course with fairways bordered by some rough before boulders. “Don’t hit off the fairways!” Gordon said.
Last year, he was a runaway winner in this event by 11 shots. “I wasn’t as confident this year – with fluctuations in my game. But when I was just one shot behind after the second round I was feeling better,” Gordon told The Free Press.
It was back-to-back wins in Hawaii for Corowa’s James Gordon.
Our local team of Gordon, Andrew Scott, Terry Davidson and Tim Hicks went one better this year, winning the stableford teams event, also by a single shot. Davidson (115 points), Hicks (114) were big contributors. “We cleaned up!” Corowa’s remarkable professional said.
Gordon leaves for New Zealand on September 29 to compete in four events, including the defence of Kaikouri title.
