Corowa Police Sergeant Stephen Marshall has announced that police presence will be significantly increased in the lead-up to Christmas and New Year, with a focus on maintaining order and preventing incidents that could compromise public safety.
“We want everyone to have a joyful and safe festive season, and to achieve this, we will be intensifying our efforts in Corowa, Mulwala, and Howlong,” Sergeant Marshall said.
“Our officers will be conducting vehicle patrols and monitoring key areas to address issues such as drink driving, Alcohol Free Zones violations, and anti-social behaviour. We will collaborate closely with our colleagues from Victoria to ensure a coordinated approach in the border region.”
With increased traffic on the roads, Sergeant Marshall highlighted the importance of responsible driving.
“Driver inattention is a major contributor to accidents, accounting for 90 percent of crashes,” he said.
“Our message is clear: stay focused, drive responsibly, and make it a safe holiday season for everyone.”
Victoria Police Senior Sergeant Nathan Ractliffe echoed these sentiments, highlighting the need for a smarter approach to travel during the festive period.
“Whether you’re a local or just passing through, we urge you to allow ample time for your journey. Rushing and unnecessary pressure on the roads can lead to accidents, and we want to prevent that,” he said.
Senior Sergeant Ractliffe also announced a 24-hour police response for the entire six-week duration of the Christmas period.
“People think we finish up at 2am but our officers will be on a 24-hour roster covering the entire Moira Shire, ensuring a prompt and effective response to any incidents that may arise.”
In addition to road safety, Senior Sergeant Ractliffe highlighted the importance of securing vehicles and belongings.
“Basic theft from cars is a recurring issue that could be prevented if vehicles were properly locked. We encourage both residents and visitors to take the necessary precautions to safeguard their belongings.”
As the festive season unfolds, the local police are committed to fostering a safe and enjoyable environment for all.
