Insurer Youi surveyed more than 2,000 Australians on the quiet codes that keep suburbia from descending into chaos, then compiled the results into the Youi’s Australian Unofficial Neighbourhood Etiquette Act, 2026
Rule one: thou shalt not be loud
If Australia has a national neighbourhood crime, it's noise. Sixty-three per cent of those surveyed said quiet hours are sacred, and almost half nominated early-morning or late-night power tools, looking at you, 7am edge-trimmer enthusiasts, as particularly unforgivable. Noise and parties were also behind one in five of the worst neighbour horror stories in the survey, making it the runaway winner of Australia's least-wanted backyard soundtrack.
The nation is remarkably united on curfew, too: about two-thirds say the noise should stop by 10pm on weeknights, with slightly more leniency granted on weekends. And when the rule is broken, noise is the one grievance Australians are most likely to actually march next door and complain about.
Rule two: the driveway is sacred ground
Somewhere between minor inconvenience and blood feud sits the blocked driveway. More than half of those surveyed said they'd speak up if a neighbour parked across their access, which is fair enough, given it's also against the law in most states. Nothing turns a friendly wave into a death stare quite like a three-point turn you didn't sign up for.
Rule three: control your pets, wave to your humans
Barking dogs and roaming cats accounted for their own slice of neighbourhood tension, with nearly half of Australians saying pet control is an unspoken duty of home ownership. Meanwhile, a quarter drew a hard line at unannounced visits, politely suggesting that, in 2026, even neighbours should message first.
Despite the list of grievances, most Australians aren't chasing a next-door best friend. The most common self-description in the survey was "friendly but private", happy to nod hello over the fence, less enthusiastic about a standing invitation to dinner.
Boomers: the last line of defence
Youi's Chief Customer Officer, Anthony Antonucci, says the results reveal a very Australian brand of neighbourliness; matey, but with firm boundaries.
"There's an unspoken balance between being friendly and respecting personal space – clearly, noise is where that line is drawn most clearly," Antonucci said.
Generationally, belief and practice don't always line up: 65 per cent of Gen Z agree the unwritten rules exist, but they're the least likely to actually follow them. Baby Boomers, on the other hand, remain the last true defenders of neighbourhood (unofficial) law and order.
Social researcher and futurist Ashley Fell says the findings capture a broader shift in how Australians are choosing to connect.
"We still value connection, but increasingly on our own terms, and in ways that feel low-effort and non-intrusive," Fell said, pointing to small gestures like a returned parcel or bins brought in as still carrying real social currency. More than half of those surveyed said simply having neighbours nearby made them feel safer and more supported.
