It is impossible to fit Robert ‘Bob’ Knight’s decades of service to the Rochester community into a single display case, but the exhibition at the Rochester Sports Museum offers a powerful glimpse into a life defined by commitment.

More than 100 people gathered on Sunday, January 11 to witness Bob pull the curtain down on a glass box containing his most precious sporting achievements.
Sport was in Bob's DNA from day one, nurtured by parents Hugh and Ivy, who instilled in him the same sporting passion and community values they lived by.
His dedication spans decades across multiple sports – football, golf, bowls, badminton, tennis and cricket – earning him an impressive nine life memberships that speak to his extraordinary commitment.
He has crossed paths with many: teammates and opponents who became friends, community members and especially family.
However, Bob’s influence extended beyond the field.
His wife, Marg, noted that his role as a Telstra manager made him a familiar face to everyone in town.
“Everyone knew Bobby Knight as the top footballer, and then he played bowls,” she said.
She shared that his charm was often found off the field.
“Somebody said to me, they used to love going out to golf with him — not because they loved golf — but because what Bob was saying in the clubhouse after was hilarious,” she said.

As a result, the turnout to the exhibition opening was extraordinary – Rochester Sports Museum volunteer Sam Watkins said it was the biggest exhibition opening since the museum began.
“The strong support we see here today is a true testament to Bob, Shirley, Marg and their families,” she said.
“So I think that just goes to show for the person or the family that we're here for today.”
While he didn’t say much to the crowd, he emphasised the importance of having the support behind him.
“Family is everything to me. Thank you all for being here,” Bob said.
After the event, the crowd moved over to the Rochester Hotel for refreshments and a few drinks to celebrate Bob and his achievements.
The exhibition will be open at the Rochester Sports Museum from January 2026 to April 2026.
