The escalator has sat broken for about a year, with people reporting that the lift has been permanently closed to customers too, leaving many unable to access the second floor.
Locals say these ongoing issues have effectively cut the store in half for older shoppers, people with mobility issues and parents with prams.
These customers are ultimately being stripped from the regular sales on all women’s and men’s wear, underwear and shoes.
It is reported that Harris Scarfe management have told customers in-store that they won’t be rectifying the issue, sparking even more outrage.
Community members have taken to Facebook groups to vent their frustrations.
“It’s not good enough for older individuals and those with mobility issues,” one member wrote.
“I won’t be making a trip to Harris Scarfe anytime soon,” another wrote.
Despite the online backlash, Harris Scarfe’s head office said it had not received any formal complaints and urged customers to submit an online feedback form.
The Spotlight Group, which owns Harris Scarfe, said it sympathised with the community’s anger but stressed that the ultimate decision and responsibility rested with the centre owner.
“We have taken all steps within our control regarding the operation and reporting of issues with shared infrastructure,” head of marketing Laurelle Esse said.
“As these assets are at end-of-life, responsibility for their replacement and major works sits with the centre owner.”
With the centre currently on the market, it’s understood that any major upgrades may fall to the new owner.
Until then, customers are being left with one option: the stairs.
