About 300 tonnes of timber at the Crossing Rd Firewood Collection Zone in Murray Valley Regional Park has been made available, with the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) confirming the final allocation under the Riverina domestic firewood program.
The allocation comes after NPWS confirmed earlier this year that the Riverina domestic firewood collection program would end at the completion of the current season.
The Mathoura stockpile has been earmarked as the final release under the program, with no further collections planned at the site once the available timber is exhausted.
The wood has been made available through the Sustainable Diversion Limit Adjustment Mechanism (SDLAM) program, with the collection zone located off Millewa Road, Mathoura, and will operate under a staggered opening schedule throughout October.
Access will begin from 10am to 5.30pm daily between September 30 and October 7, before closing from October 8 to October 13.
The site will reopen from October 14 to October 21, operating from 7.30am to 5.30pm each day, before another closure from October 22 to October 27.
The final collection period will run from October 28 to October 30, again from 7.30am to 5.30pm daily.
NPWS has advised that the gate to the collection zone will be locked during all closed periods.
Domestic firewood collection permits will be available through the NPWS Riverina firewood permit system, with permits being issued until October 30 only. Go to www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/conservation-and-heritage/care-for-parks/riverina-firewood-collection-permit.
After the closure of collection, NPWS will continue regular patrols of the collection zone to ensure permit holders comply with permit conditions and has installed monitoring cameras at the site.
