In 2019, the footy club's committee members were scratching their heads and wondering how they could turn their fortunes around after the senior’s team finished the Tallangatta and District League season at the bottom of the ladder.
This was followed by an interrupted and dismal season as a result the COVID-19 pandemic last year.
However, under the leadership of Kodee Lowe, the seniors have signed several recruits to add some much-needed experience and a morale boost to their side.
Last Thursday, all five of Wahgunyah’s football teams trained down at Wahgunyah Recreation Reserve building excitement for the year ahead.
According to President Darren Harvey the idea of training all together is to encourage leadership and place emphasis on the family culture.
“We want our guys supporting each other and looking out for the younger grades,” Harvey said.
This year, Josh Black will serve as the Junior Development and Coaching Coordinator overseeing junior development in all grades.
“We are really hoping to strengthen the connection between the junior and senior playing groups,” Harvey said.
Overall, Harvey said the entire club is just “really happy to get going”.
“This year our main focus is building on our culture,” he said.
“We are first and foremost a family club and the majority of our players and coaches are local.
“We really want to bring some respectability back into the club and from that gauge respect.
“It’s all about true country footy and we really want to make a big impact in the league this year.”
