State Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland and Shadow Racing Minister Tim McCurdy announced on Monday, October 12 that the Victorian Coalition would invest in the first stage of the club’s redevelopment if it formed government following the November state election.
Mr Martin said the announcement recognised the important role racing played in Seymour and the wider region.
“Racing is a significant part of Seymour’s identity and economy, and this commitment is an exciting step towards strengthening its future,” he said.
“Developing Seymour Racing Club as a regional training hub would create opportunities to attract more trainers and horses to the area, support local employment and generate more business for the people who service our industry.
“From stable staff and track workers to farriers, vets, feed suppliers and local trades, the benefits of a strong racing industry extend well beyond the racecourse.”
The $3 million commitment would support the continued growth of racing in Seymour and the local businesses, workers and families who rely on the industry.
Ms Cleeland said racing was an important part of Seymour’s economy and a major contributor to the Mitchell Shire.
“Recent economic data shows just how significant that industry is, with thoroughbred and harness racing contributing $94.9 million to the Mitchell Shire economy and supporting 752 full-time equivalent jobs,” she said.
“That is a lot more than what happens on race day. It is money flowing through local businesses, families earning an income and visitors spending money in our towns.
“People in Seymour know the value of racing. What we need is the infrastructure to match the importance of the industry to our region.”
Mr Martin said the club hoped to build a strong, sustainable future with facilities that supported the needs of racing participants “for years to come”.
“This commitment towards the first stage of redevelopment would help us progress that work and strengthen Seymour’s role as a regional centre for racing and training,” he said.
“We thank Annabelle Cleeland and Tim McCurdy for recognising this opportunity and backing the future of racing in Seymour.
“We look forward to continuing discussions with all stakeholders to progress the redevelopment and deliver lasting benefits for our community.”
