The Deniliquin Aquatic Community Group Incorporated - previously know as Deniliquin Outdoor Pools Inc when it last managed the facility - took over the contract on October 1.
Group spokesperson John Arthur said the centre’s leadership structure has now been confirmed and the indoor pool open, and work is taking place to prepare for the outdoor pools for the season ahead.
“Pool manager is Katrina Ives, and Andrew ‘AJ’ Newman is the second in command,” Mr Arthur said.
“To have Katrina back is wonderful. She has been a pool manager for 20 years and been working at the pool for 25 years.
“She has built so many relationships and knowledge over that time, which really helps.
“The outdoor pool is opening November 1 and the Deniliquin hydro pool is open with varying hours available to the community.
“We’re looking to set up learn to swim programs now, and while dates have not been confirmed, the community can rest assured that they will be worked out following the opening of the pool.
“We’re more than happy to take or receive enquiries on the Deniliquin Aquatic Community Group Incorporated Facebook page.”
One of the key tasks in preparing for the learn to swim classes is having instructors with the right skills in place.
“We’re looking for AUSTSWIM teachers. If there are people out there keen to do the course, we’d be happy to assist with course costs.
“For the AUSTSWIM course and learn to swim coaching, you do have to be a qualified instructor.
“We’re looking to upskill the Deni workforce and would welcome anyone who’s interested in giving back to the community, loves working with kids and want’s to make a difference in the community - swimming is such a valuable life skill.
“There is also always work for lifeguards.
“If people are fine with the heat and keen to work, positions are available and will be advertised shortly.”
The local community group takes back control of the swim centre from Sydney-based Lifeguarding Services Australia (LSA), who was awarded the contract in 2022.
LSA’s appointment was controversial, and the local community committee had also tendered for the contract and was overlooked despite successfully managing the facility for 10 years.
Then council general manager Phil Stone said the LSA submission was “impressive” and offered “value for money”.
But complaints were made to the Pastoral Times and via social media throughout their tenure, particularly regarding access to and organisation of the learn to swim programs.
In response to community requests, the newly renamed Deniliquin Aquatic Community Group Inc successfully ran its own swimming lessons program, with the support of LSA, at the swim centre earlier this year.
Mr Arthur said the committee is pleased to be extending their service to the community as the official managers.
“We’re really enthused and happy to be back, and hope the community are just as excited,” he said.
“We’re always willing to take on any community ideas and feedback, and Katrina is especially looking forward to the return of lap swimmers who had been very loyal and consistent over a long period of time.
“The hydro pool is operating really well, and we think we’ve got that water balance just right and are looking forward to getting that outdoors as well.”
