Lucrative contract awarded for landfill build

Council has granted a Hawthorn East company a lucrative contract to develop the Cobram landfill.

At a general council meeting on Wednesday, September 24, Moira Shire Council administrators awarded a $2,958,703.78 contract to Goldsmith Civil and Environmental for works at the Cobram landfill.

Speaking at the meeting, chair administrator Graeme Emonson said the contract had received considerable interest.

“I’m very satisfied that a very transparent and rigorous procurement process has been undertaken to arrive at the recommendation for Goldsmith Civil and Environmental to be awarded this important contract,” he said.

“Whilst these are costly exercises, they are necessary ones on behalf of the community.”

Dr Emonson moved a motion to award the contract to Goldsmith Civil and Environmental.

Administrator Susan Benedyka seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.

The works will include the capping of landfill cells four to eight, and the construction of a new cell 10 as cell nine approaches the end of its operating life.

The new cell will ensure continued capacity to dispose of municipal and commercial waste, while the capping of the older cells ensures compliance with environmental protection standards.
