Keen photographers and fruit growers, like their maternal grandfather Arthur E. Smith, a specially prepared fruit cake was made by Diane Nardella to celebrate the occasion.
Arthur Smith arrived to the area in 1920 and established orchards around Kyabram, so the ‘’fruit cake’’ was fittingly arranged into the figure 60.
Fruit family: Kyabram’s Nardella twins grew up on orchards and, fittingly, their 60th birthday cake was made of the same fruit that came off their family’s farms.
The brothers’ cousin, Juliette Kent, alerted us to the milestone birthday of the twins who are known in not only farming circles, but also accomplished sportsmen.
“Happy birthday to my twin cousins. I can remember when you were both two and a half years old in nappies on that hot summer in Tatura when mum looked after you.
“We had some good laughs that summer of ’66 as children,” she said.
“One of the cousins, (who I won't name due to potential embarrassment) got stuck in the outside toilet in the middle of the paddock when the neighbours bull got out and circled the toilet for two hours.
“I remember yabbying on hot days for our dinner. Mum was changing endless nappies for the twins,” Juliette said
Rick Nardella is known for his photography work, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, who was a keen photographer in Egypt and Jordan during World War I before immigrating to Kyabram.
Rick’s photography was on display at Society Cafe between COVID-19 lockdowns.
Identical: Nino and Rick Nardella as toddlers. The family has a history with the town dating back to 1920.
