Winter is considered a dangerous time of year for house fires due to clothing being too close to heaters, damaged wiring in electric blankets, and stove-top cooking left unattended.
“We want to urge everyone not to get complacent. You must have working fire alarms and ensure that your fire escape plan is up to date,” Mr Bush told The Free Press.
Each year, NSW Fire and Rescue Station 268 Corowa offers a home fire safety check for elderly and disabled residents or anyone who wants their property checked.
“We probably visit up to 200 houses around Corowa. The Corowa RSL donates the batteries for the smoke alarms,” Mr Bush said.
According to Mr Bush, most cases of household fires can be easily prevented by following the Fire and Rescue NSW Winter Fire Safety Checklist, which is available on their website.
