Another season of tennis has come and gone with the culmination of the Grand Finals played at Corowa on Saturday.
There were tears of joy and tears of disappointment as the results became clear as the day drew to a close.
For the victors the spoils, for the defeated another season of high hopes dashed at the final hurdle. In perfect weather conditions play began under the cloud of the Covid-19 crisis but all players were enthusiastic and aware of the strict playing conditions.
Wang Lawn (Wendy Hogan, Janelle Hartwig, Carolyn Shaw, Andrew Pyta, Shaun Ablazej, Robert Voss) managed to overcome a determined Corowa Blue outfit to raise the Section 1 trophy.
The result was in the balance early as the first 2 sets went for a lengthy period of time, but it was Wang Lawn that won those sets to set up the rest of the day.
Lawn were always in control and never looked troubled after the initial Corowa onslaught and ran out comprehensive winners.
Wendy Hogan and Shaun Ablazej were outstanding for Lawn while Claire Davidson, Darrell Spencer and Kim Broughton battled against the odds for Corowa Blue.
Section 2
Wahgunyah Red (Mareeta Corcoran, Ethan Palmer, Sonia Palmer, Travis McDonald, Adam Corcoran, Jesse Johnstone) have completed a magnificent season with an overwhelming defeat of Myrrhee, Wahgunyah were by and far the best team of Section 2 which was shown by their undefeated season and the distance between themselves and the rest of the Section 2 teams.
Wahgunyah were a little shaky at the start as Myrrhee’s Dylan Van Berlo and Daniel Griffin were unlucky not to snatch a victory in their set but it was the steadiness in a crisis of Travis and Adam when needed that helped them prevail.
Once Wahgunyah Red regained their composure they were never troubled again, and they romped away to a comfortable victory.
Myrrhee have been the second-best team all year but this wasn’t enough for them to put any pressure on Wahgunyah, as Wahgunyah Red were streets above the rest of the competition. Myrrhee can be proud of their efforts during the year and knowing that they made the last day of the season something which a number of other teams didn’t do.
Wahgunyah Red’s season has been one based on distributing the workload across the entire team and Saturday was just another case of this.
Myrrhee had none better than Robyn Oliver, Cathy Van Berlo and Dylan Van Berlo.
Section 3
Wahgunyah Blue (Jake Saville, Tye Callow, Corey Hill, Matt Vogel) not only have the bragging rights but shield after the defeated fellow Wahgunyah team, Wahgunyah Red (Andrew Palmer, Brett Skinner, Peter Trebley, Kane Palmer).
Nothing has separated the 2 Wahgunyah sides during the season as they had split the results during the home and away season, although Blue had won the last 2 encounters and with it a psychological advantage over Red heading into the decider.
Red were thrown into confusion early in the day as they had to make a change to their side due to illness which threw their strategy for the day into disarray and Red never recovered from this and were always playing catch up tennis against the raging Blue machine.
Wahgunyah Blue were clearly the best team on the day and they played like winners from the start and were never threatened by Red at any stage.
