Asbestos-containing materials were discovered at the offices on September 23, promoting the immediate closure of the office for safety reasons while intervestigations took place.
The office will remain closed while asbestos remediation works are carried out, with all council services available from Jerilderie Library in the interim.
The closure was recommended by an independent licensed occupational hygienist as a precautionary safety measure, and SafeWork NSW was notified in line with regulatory requirements.
The occupational hygienist has since prepared a detailed asbestos management plan, which is guiding the council’s response to ensure safe and thorough remediation.
Comprehensive air and dust testing has showed levels are within normal environmental background ranges.
The full remediation will be undertaken by a Class A licensed asbestos removalist, and staff will return only after all works are complete and clearance certificates have been issued.
Murrumbidgee Council Mayor Ruth McRae OAM said the safety of the community and the council team remains the highest priority.
She thanked staff for their flexibility while working in the library and also expressed appreciation to the community for their understanding.
“All council services are available at the Jerilderie Library next door, with the exception of banking services, as the Bendigo Bank agency has ceased operating in Jerilderie, effective October 13, 2025,” Cr McRae said.
Council is also using this opportunity to strengthen building assessments, management, and workplace health and safety procedures.
