The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) campaign calls on Australians to run, walk or ride 72km throughout Prostate Cancer Awareness Month to raise awareness and funds for research and support.
The disease is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the region, with one Australian man diagnosed every 22 minutes.
Mr Douch, who is a prostate cancer survivor, has rallied supporters behind the cause, making the fundraising leaderboard with an incredible $2,200 raised so far.
The Corowa local was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2021 and had a radical prostatectomy last October.
Mr Douch said he’s joined The Long Run to fight back against the disease and encourage other men to get tested.
“Early detection is vital – and through The Long Run I hope to encourage more men to speak with their doctor about PSA testing,” he said.
“If men are diagnosed, it’s important they also know they don’t have to suffer in silence. The more we spread the word about this silent killer, the more it will help men to talk about their journey and mental health openly.
“I’ll be riding 72km for my father, who also had a prostatectomy over 20 years ago, and my uncle who passed away with the disease.
“Life is still challenging but I’m still here and know that I’m one of the lucky ones.”

Chief Executive Officer of the organisation Anne Savage commended Mr Douch for making a difference.
“Community action is key to cancer control, helping us to raise awareness of Australia’s most commonly diagnosed cancer and encourage early detection,” Ms Savage said.
“Importantly, The Long Run helps us support men and their families, providing vital funding for clinical trials and PCFA prostate cancer nurses.
“Michael is one of our fundraising superstars and an inspiration – demonstrating that together we can make a difference, helping love go the distance against prostate cancer.”
Several thousand eager runners, walkers and cyclists are expected to join The Long Run this September, with a total goal of $1 million for research, support services and awareness.
