Grand final ‘replay’; Moama’s debut

With all local football gear back among the mothballs, Echuca cricketers have just completed the resurrection of their equipment and flannels, and tomorrow will see the opening day in Echuca Cricket Association matches.
The opening round will be full of interest, for it will provide a ‘replay’ of last year’s grand final, and will mark the debut of the newly formed Moama club.
Main game, on last year’s form, will be at the park where grand finalists, Torrumbarry and Echuca East, will be opposed. Torrumbarry has been the outstanding team in the association over recent years, winning the pennant three times in the past four years.
It has a particularly strong line-up headed by the evergreen veterans Jock Phyland and Roy Dunham, with the Williams brothers, Splatt and Marsh giving strong support to the team.

Farmers gambling on good seasons
Victorian farmers have a record number of stock at present but they are apparently gambling on a continuance of good seasons for, according to Department of Agriculture offices, the fodder reserves are at dangerously low levels. A dry autumn in 1952 could cause a catastrophic situation, according to one expert.
“Our fodder reserves are at a dangerously low level,” district officer Mr G. B. Rayner said yesterday.
He added that there was little hay about in the district and that apparently graziers had short memories and had forgotten the lesson of the 1944-45 drought when it had been necessary to import fodder. The graziers were in a much worse position than farmers with irrigation properties who pursued a routine programme of conservation.
Wheat farmers had greatly increased their flocks at the expense of crop, and many had no provision at all for hay, the stock population had increased considerably while fodder provision had fallen away, and this caused a dangerous situation.

Strong ring events likely at Echuca Show
Prize money for the hunting and arena events for the Echuca A and P Society’s Show has been increased by approximately five per cent over last year’s figure, and keen competition is expected in these sections.
A team of horses from the stable of Mr T. A. Field, of Sydney passed through Echuca this week en route to the Melbourne Royal Show, and it is expected that several of them will be entered at Echuca.
Last year, the team made Echuca a stopping place on its return trip to Sydney from the ‘Royal’ and practically scooped the pool with its entries, several of which won hunting and hackney classes in Melbourne.
In addition to winning events, the team provided excellent exhibitions of pair jumping.

Baskets for hearts
You never know who you might see on a basketball court, particularly if it’s for a worthy cause.
That’s why Campaspe Shire Mayor Peter Williams will don the Heartkids Victoria T-shirt and his gym shoes to play in a celebrity match at the Nestle Basketball Stadium tomorrow night.
A barbecue at 5pm followed by the celebrity match at 6pm will kick off a great fundraising night, aimed at family entertainment.
An auction of sporting memorabilia runs until the main basketball match at 8pm and will continue at half time, along with a raffle draw.

Terrorist attacks hit home
Five Echuca-Moama residents are among Australians in the United States struggling to come to terms with the horror of the terrorist attack that devastated the nation.
All five, who are either living and working or holidaying in the US, are safe and well and trying to cope with the tragedy. Their remarkable and horrific tales have been recounted through family members.
Tuesday, September 11, will go down as the blackest day in US history, which saw four separate terrorist attacks bring the superpower to a virtual standstill.
Former Echuca resident Julie Lammardo, daughter of Olive and George Morgan, is currently at home in Albany, New York, with husband Ron and two-year-old daughter Veronica coming to terms with the shock of Tuesday’s terrorist attack.

Secondary college girls are fit to lead
As a physical and sport education school, Echuca Secondary College sees the importance of involving girls in physical activity as a major priority.
The school currently has 10 Year 11 girls involved in a program called ‘Fit to Lead’, which aims to enhance women’s health, self-esteem and leadership skills through physical activity.
The Fit to Lead program was established by experts in 1997 in response to gender and equity issues associated with participation in physical activity.
Echuca Secondary College has implemented the program in recognition of such issues and strongly encourages and supports girls in leading physically active lifestyles.

Humpty Dumpty saw a shortfall, our hospital had a great windfall
Echuca Regional Health will be better prepared for a paediatric emergency thanks to a recent donation.
This year’s Humpty Dumpty Balmoral Burn raised money to buy the hospital a new $3550 paediatric emergency trolley.
ERH executive director of nursing June Dyson said the hospital was grateful to the Humpty Dumpty Foundation for the trolley, which would be used in the maternity/paediatric unit.
‘‘It will be used to store resuscitation equipment required specifically for paediatric patients,’’ she said.

Rider battles round six bog
Echuca motocross rider Craig Rosendale struggled with boggy conditions at Buln Buln in Gippsland for last weekend’s sixth round of the Viper Vintage Series.
“The natural terrain track weaved around a hillside that drained away most of the large amount of rain,” he said.
“But it left an extremely slippery surface. Add more rain that fell for race day and survival was foremost in everyone’s mind.”
Rosendale’s Yamaha Z250 had to work hard in the mud. He and the bike managed to finish every heat and even passed some larger-capacity bikes.

Byrne-ing to be captain
Echuca netballer Bridget Byrne has been selected as joint captain of the 15-and-under North Central state team.
Byrne was co-captain of the 15-and-under North Central side that competed in Bendigo last year and was picked out of the record 140 players who tried out for the squad.
This season there were seven netballers from the Echuca Football Netball Club chosen in the squad of 20 across the 17-and-under and 15-and-under sides. Meg Rohde, Issy Fitzsimmons, Maya Pearce and Claudia Mawson were also chosen in the 15-and-under team to be coached by Betty McCoomb.
Eve Gregor and Dearnah Kent were selected for the older age group when the teams head to Werribee on October 8 and 9 to compete at the state national championships.
