Rochester shire council has turned down a request from state minister Brian Dixon to consider nude bathing areas in the shire.
The government had received requests from groups and individuals to set aside specific areas for nude bathing. There was no legislation for the past time and nude bathers could be prosecuted without the legislation.
Once councillor suggested there were 73 miles of river frontage and those who wanted to partake in the activity could sneak in anywhere.
— Janine Ham was named Miss Show Girl at the Rochester show and Sandra Thompson was runner-up. Ziselda Le Vay won Miss Tiny Tot and Mark Cox Master Tiny Tot.
Beth McDonald organised the event for the show committee.
— Rochester lost both the B grade and B reserve grand finals of the Campaspe pennant bowls competition. In B grade they lost to Echuca by seven shots and B reserve lost to Echuca by one shot.
In B grade Cliff Crilly's rink of Cap Speers, Russ Major and Bill Christie won by three shots and Dick Keech's rink of Robert Taylor, Ian Christie and Vaughan Thompson won by five shots. On the remaining rink Bernie Gibbs' four lost by 15 shots to see Echuca win the title.
In B reserve Harry Briggs, Johnson McMahon, Kim Sharkey and Jack Newman won 29—22 and Stan Smith's rink of Bill Ives, Dick Lawrence and Stan Brentnall won by five. On the other rink, skipper Waedaugh's rink lost by 13 to make it a one-shot defeat.
— Federal Member for Murray, Bruce Lloyd presented an Australian flag to Nanneella Estate primary school students Michael Prentice and Lee-Anne Wolfe, along with Bob McNee.
Mr Lloyd attended the school as a young boy.
1989
— Matthew Trewin and Tracy Smith were named captains of Rochester Primary School.
Jeremy Campbell and Lisa Erfurt were elected vice captains, while others to hold official posts were house captains Toby Acocks and Megan Hughes (Apollo), Michael Willis and Holly Fraser (Gemini), Ben Trevena and Kelly Mathers (Saturn).
— Sharelle McMahon was named Miss Junior Showgirl at Rochester show. Diggora girl Amanda Shotton was named Miss Sun Country Showgirl.
Association president Barry Bickley hailed the 103rd show a huge success with total gate takings of $700.
He said between 2000 to 2500 people enjoyed Friday night's entertainment.
Darren Chugg, Rohan Shawcross and Stuart Palmer won the bay stacking competition, while Danny Moon, Dwight Weeks, Tim Watson and Luke Beauglehall won their section.
— New rochester football coach Nigel van der Veer and recruits Wayne Spencer and Steven Knight were unveiled in a practice match with reigning Northern District League premiers Cohuna.
1999
Alan Gardiner was named the new president of Rochester Probus Club as the club celebrated a doubling of its membership since its formation 15 months earlier.
The club boasted 125 members. Mr Gardiner took over from Eric Kneebone.
Margaret Stone was the new treasurer and Ken Pearson the secretary.
— Fifteen-year-old Heidi Riordan was on track to compete at the Olympics after competing at the 1500m event at the Grand Prix athletics championships.
She had competed at both Sydney and Hobart, registering her PB of 4:30 minutes.
— Cathie Halliday was elected the new Mayor of Campaspe shire, replacing Greg Toll in the role.
— Campaspe shire drew praise from the state emergency service for being one of the first regional municipalities to formulate a flood response plan.
The Municipal Flood Respnse Plan and municipal flood standard operating procedure was adopted by council at its meeting.
Under the policy, sandbags would be free to residents and a flood plan sub-committee had also been formed.
2009
Rochester and Elmore district Health service appointed Glenis Beaumont as its new chief executive officer.
She arrived as CEO from a role with Bendigo Health, REDHS board president Mary Magennis saying her solid track record would be a major benefit to the organisation.
— Campaspe council allocated $65,000 to the refurbishment of the historic shire hall, from the $1.2 million it received as part of a federal government stimulus package.
If approved the funds were to be used for work on the front meeting room, kitchen and toilets.
