The Roos hit the ground running scoring the first two goals of the game, compliments of live-wire small forward Hayden Filliponi.
There was plenty of energy as the players worked hard to win the footy in the contest and work the ball forward using the corridor effectively. At time scores were 4.2.26 a-piece.
In the second the game tightened up as the pressure mounted from both sides.
Kyle Docherty continued to be a focal point up forward with strong leading, but many of the Roos forward moves were thwarted by the Lavington defenders.
At half time it was the Roos 5.3.33 just trailing the Panthers 5.5.35.
Coach Peter German continued to emphasise the importance of the third in a game of football.
The Roos were able to respond by stepping up the pressure and continuing to run hard with Charlie Nastasi and Damien and Cameron Wilson contributing strongly in the clinches.
Jason Marks was showing that his move forward was working a treat. Tyson Logie and Kade Kuschert were effective defenders, and Kyle Docherty continued to kick straight taking his tally to 6 goals.
Tom Goodwin was giving the Roo on-ballers first use at the stoppages. Hayden Filliponi took a mark inside 50 on the siren, his helicopter kick just cleared the Panther’s defenders to give the Roos a 14-point lead at the final change.
At the start of the last, Lavington kicked two quick goals to get within two points and starting to look dangerous. However, the Corowa Rutherglen leaders were able to steady the ship and keep their team-mates focused on the game plan and the importance of execution.
First gamer, Ryan Eyers used his athleticism to win possession in some vital contests and Kyle Docherty added two more goals. The Roos got to a 25-point lead before Lavington scored a late goal.
Final Scores: Corowa Rutherglen 13.5.83 to Lavington 9.10.64
Best players: Kyle Docherty (8 goals) Charlie Nastasi, Cameron Wilson, Damien Wilson, Jarred Lane and Jason Marks.
This takes the club to three wins from their three starts at John Foord Oval in 2021.
Reserves
The Corowa Rutherglen reserves again faced a huge challenge with a long list of players who were either injured or unavailable.
After some negotiations with the Lavington officials four of the Lavington boys lined up in Corowa Rutherglen colours.
Despite having sufficient numbers at the start of the game, the Roos were totally outclassed over the four quarters to lose by a massive 172 points.
Best players: Tom Robinson, Mark Athanitis and Bailey Pirnag.
Thirds
The Roos were caught napping early on when Lavington came out and kicked 2 quick goals. The Roos quickly realised that Lavington was not going to be a push over and starting to gain control all over the ground.
There was little separating the two teams at half time so Coach Tommy and his side kick Oz, gave the boys a few home truths and told them to get aboard the Jesse train and have a red hot go.
They were told to utilise the drills that they had done at training to move the ball down to the forwards and if the ball did go into the backline, all players were expected to chip in and help one another out.
The talk did wonders with the young Roos who came out for the third and put on 6 goals 4 points for the whilst Lavington could only manage 3 points.
The ever-reliable Ryan Beveridge scored goals in every whilst new recruit Hayden Sampson was like a ball magnet in the third and slotted 4 goals for the term.
Roos on ballers in Jesse Johnstone, Ollie Struve, Jordy McKenzie and co worked hard all day getting in and under the packs dishing out hand balls to runners or delivering the ball to our forward line.
Ned Taylor roamed across half back and repelled many attempts that were made by Lavington to get into their forward line.
Lavington tried to come back in the last, but the boys held onto their 40 point lead to take out the game and give themselves a much needed confidence booster.
Next week sees the young Roos take on an old arch-rival in Yarrawonga in what will be an exciting contest. Let’s all get behind the future of our club. GO ROOS!!

The Round 4 clash at Birallee Park saw the Roos take on Raiders Red on another warm Autumn day.
An enthralling first quarter seen the upper hand taken slightly by a hard running raiders team. Doug asked the boys to start the way they finished the quarter as the quiet start had been costly.
The standard of the game was set early with fast attacking footy being the order of the day. Loose play allowed the Raiders to continue to stretch the Roos boys creating havoc across the ground. A 10 goal to 5 first half being a telling difference.
Isaac up from the 14s was proving a handy inclusion with a couple of goals ultimately finishing with 5. Cooper snagging one off the ground and Mitch looking dangerous by quarters end.
At half time, Doug asked the boys to play tight, urging the mid fielders to own the contest and run both ways, assisting the back.
Jake and Mango battled hard but were up against an opposition forward running rampant.
The second half seeing a tighter affair, a credit to the boys, with Justin through centre, Ethan up forward and around the ground backed up by Tommy’s endless attack on the ball seen essentially a drawn second half. The Roos particularly strong in the last.
Best Players: Ethan Hanrahan, Isaac Dickinson, Angus Smith, Jake Shipard, Tommy Alison and Justin Lewis.

It was a warm day at Birralee Park in Wodonga with the Corowa boys starting well with most of the play. Jaxson Bolger kicked the first goal and Isaac Dickinson getting the second.
The goals were coming thick and fast with Leroy Chester, Brodie Eyers and Jay Lavis all scoring. Isaac kicked another and Jay, Hunter Hall and Jayden Forge all playing well out of the centre. Lucas Tafft kicked a late goal to end the quarter 8 goals to none.
The second quarter started well with Ethan Lane goaling. Benji Hanrahan was moving well across the frontline and Daniel Ryland working well across half back. Jayden was moving fast through the centre. Jayden and Benji goaled giving our boys a lead of 77 points at the end of the quarter.
Daniel Ryland was holding strong across half back and Benji was playing well in the centre during the third quarter. Hunter, Ethan and Lucas were all running well through the centre with goals to Ethan Lane and Jordan Allen later in the quarter.
The last quarter showed lots of opportunities for all team members to get the ball and contribute to a great win. Well done boys!!

The under 12 Roos took on Wodonga Raiders Red at the later time of 11am at Emerald oval in very warm conditions.
Brodie and Eli were in the action early thanks to Emmett’s dominance in the ruck resulting in a goal to Hayden. Raiders Red then hit back with a goal, the play then was end to end with plenty of contested ball. 1/4 time scores Roos 1.1.7 to Raiders Red 1.2.8.
At the first bounce in the second 1/4, Emmett tapped down to Eli who handballed to a running Lachie Ireland and sent the ball into the forward line. With some terrific forward pressure, Ajay pounced on a loose ball and snapped truly from the pocket.
The Roos backline was superb thank to Cohen, Hudson Kuschert, Will and Austin, repelling every attack by Raiders Red, holding them scoreless for the quarter. Rhylee was growing in confidence with intercept marks and several inside 50s resulting in a great goal to Cooper.
Half time scores Roos 3.5.23 to 1.2.8.
In the 3 quarter, coach Patto threw Cohen into the ruck to give Emmett a rest at centre half back. While Cohen was great in the ruck, Emmett was busy intercepting everything that came near him, with great support from Connah and Levi down back. Raiders Red did hit back with 2 goals, but a goal to Hayden on the three quarter time siren gave the Roos an 11 point lead going into the last.
The last quarter started with a great centre clearance from the Roos, with the boys hitting targets by foot and Joe kicking truly in the first minute.
A terrific individual effort by Brodie with repeat efforts denied Raiders a forward entry. Lachie Douglas was desperate deep in the forward line getting the ball to Joe for his second goal. Raiders Red then kicked 2 quick goals to reduce the margin, but Hudson Bilney sealed the win with a great snap.
Coach Patto was delighted with a great 4 quarter effort from the boys.
Final scores: Roos 7.9.51 to Raiders Red 5.4.34.
Awards: Cofield Plumbing - Eli, Boyer Automotive - Emmett, JJ O’Conner - Rhylee, Corowa Chocolate Cohen & Lachie Douglas, Ricky D’s Pizza – Connah.
