Since joining the Rutherglen Unit in 2007, Roger Farrell has dedicated 17 years to supporting emergency response, community engagement, and the operational capability of the unit.
Throughout his service, Roger took on numerous leadership and support roles, including Section Leader, Operational Response Member, Community Engagement Representative, Unit Finance Officer, and Unit Duty Officer.
He is widely regarded as a steady, reliable, and humble person, always ready to step forward when needed and his years of commitment have had a lasting and positive impact on both the Unit and the Rutherglen community.
The event also celebrated the remarkable 43-year contribution of Irene Cracknell, who joined the Rutherglen Unit on September 14, 1981 as its first female active member.
Her service has been defined by exceptional leadership, operational excellence, and unwavering dedication to her community.
Irene has served as Unit Controller across two periods (1988–2002 and 2019–2023) and has held the role of Deputy Controller for more than 20 years.
She has played vital roles in major emergency responses, including tornadoes, floods, search operations, and vehicle rescues, and has been a mentor and guide to generations of SES volunteers.
Her distinguished contributions have been recognised through numerous honours, including SES Long Service Medals for 10 through 40 years, the National Medal and Clasps, the Medal of the Order of Australia (2003), and the Emergency Services Medal (ESM) in 2025.
In recognition of her transformative impact, Irene was awarded Rutherglen Unit Life Membership, the highest honour the Unit can bestow.
