An Indigo Shire councillor has resigned from his position after more than a decade of service.
Cr Larry Goldsworthy announced his shock resignation, effective immediately last Friday.
Cr Goldsworthy first joined Indigo Shire Council in 2008, serving one term, including a year as mayor, was re-elected in 2016 and again in 2020.
The Beechworth resident has been an active member of various community organisations and initiatives including serving as a sergeant at the Wodonga Police Station, stints as the past president and treasurer of the Beechworth Rotary Club, and also past president of Beechworth Secondary College School Council. Furthermore, he has actively participated in the local swimming, hockey, and football clubs.
Within the Indigo Shire Council, Cr Goldsworthy has been an integral part of various committees and working groups, serving as a member and chairperson of the Municipal Emergency Management Planning Committee, Finance Committee, Rail Trail Community Reference Group, and Economic and Tourism Advisory Committee.
“On behalf of all councillors, I’d like to acknowledge the contribution that Cr Goldsworthy has made to Indigo and we thank him for his commitment and dedication to improving the liveability of the shire,” Mayor Sophie Price said.
Indigo Shire Council will now need to follow prescribed procedures to fill the vacant position, with a countback likely to be held to determine Cr Goldsworthy’s replacement.
The next local government elections are due to be held in late 2024.
