Australia’s best water skiers will be competing for bragging rights leading into the world’s best water ski tournament – the Moomba Masters which is held annually on the Yarra River in Melbourne during March.
There is non-stop action from 8am on both Saturday and Sunday with slalom skiers from NSW, Victoria, Qld, WA and the ACT, carving up the water creating spectacular“water walls” as they chase each other in reaching their maximum buoy count.
This year, no fewer than seven Australian record holders will be leading contenders for outright honours over the two days.
Making a return to competitive skiing is none other than Emma Sheers, two-time World Slalom Champion and World Jump Champion from Qld.
Hot contender in the men’s division will be current Australian team member and Australian slalom record holder, Nick Adams.
Lake Moodemere is Nick’s “home water” and if he is not there, you will find him on the international tournament circuit during the northern hemispheres summer.
Nick is certain to give it a red hot go as he prepares for Moomba and later the World Championships in Putrajaya, Malaysia in August.
Chasing down Nick will be local skier from Bundalong, Tom Ryan. Tom, past Australian under 21 champion and member of the Mulwala Water Ski Club Show Team is all fired up from his latest stint during our winters coaching in the USA.
Other skiers that stand a great chance of taking home the silverware will be Trent Nelson Cranfield, from the ACT and Melbourne young gun Jack Christie, holder of the Australian Under 17 slalom record, now competing with the big boys in the open division.
Although Emma Sheers is favourite in the women’s division the standout competitor to watch is Bundalong skier Tara Ryan (yes, sister of Tom). Tara is a past Australian Under 21 slalom champion and is now skiing in the open women’s division.
It’s bound to be an exciting weekend of slalom skiing.
