Morticia and Uncle Fester have done it again.
The spooky couple claimed top honours in the Elmore Playgroup Halloween house competition, wowing neighbours with an immersive display of spooks and spectres.
The creative force behind the haunted yard, Karen Niven, says the journey began three years ago when daughter Kelsey asked if they could hand out lollies.
“I said, ‘no worries!’ and thought I might as well get dressed up too,” she said.
Her partner, Murray, was won over the following year, unable to resist the pure joy beaming across local kids’ faces.
What started as a simple lolly drop quickly snowballed into a major neighbourhood attraction requiring two hours of setup.
While store-bought props help fill out the graveyard scene, handcrafted touches give the display its genuine charm.
This season’s showstopper was a giant spider creeping along the property, drawing gasps and laughter from passers-by.
Beyond the thrills and chills, the real magic lies in the smiles of the children and families who turn out each year.
“Watching the excitement on the children’s faces and seeing young families out and about really brings so much life to our little town,” Karen said.
“Not to mention, all my grandchildren absolutely love it.”
With plans already brewing for next year’s setup, the winning decorator hopes the Elmore Playgroup keeps the tradition alive — and is calling on more locals to get involved.
“I would certainly encourage other households to get involved and participate next year,” Karen said.
