For the past 10 years, the combined Two Rivers Run and Riverina Trekkers clubs have been running week-long vintage tractor treks between the Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers, raising money for MND.
Held every second year, the 2024 trek raised $45,000, bringing the total contribution to $113,000.
Riverina Trekkers secretary Robyn Cole said the event featured men and women driving vintage tractors from town to town over seven days, with the local community supporting fundraising efforts.
“Australian of the Year, the courageous Neale Daniher, is raising awareness of this disease and searching for a cure, and our club wants to support him in this very worthy cause,” she said.
“The sight and sound of these heritage tractors moving through local communities brings people outside to experience rural heritage, creating a buzz as they pass.”
The Two Rivers Run Charity Trek will travel around north-east Victoria, leaving Yarrawonga and moving through Goorambat, Murchison, Colbinabbin, Wakiti Creek Resort, Wunghnu, and back to Yarrawonga over seven days.
Each participant pays an entry fee to cover food, with all other funds raised going directly to the MND cause.
Generally, 40-50 trekkers take part, purchasing fuel, food, and other supplies along the route, supporting local communities throughout the week.
“There will be two auctions during the trek, with proceeds going to MND,” Robyn said.
“The first will be at Wunghnu, and the second, a giant auction, at the Yarrawonga Showgrounds pavilion on our return night.
“Your support can be in the form of a direct donation, auction items, or even sponsoring a vehicle, with our club happily promoting your organisation through branded acknowledgements.”
The journey begins on the Sunday, travelling from Yarrawonga to the Goorambat Footy Club, before continuing on Monday to the Murchison Football Grounds.
On Tuesday, the group drives to the Colbinabbin Recreation Grounds, followed by Wakiti Creek Resort on Wednesday.
Thursday’s leg takes them to Wunghnu, with Friday finishing at the Wunghnu Recreation Reserve Footy Club.
The final stretch on Saturday returns to the Yarrawonga Showgrounds, with tractor drivers expected to arrive at each destination daily at about 4pm.
A community evening and public auction will be held at the Colbinabbin Footy Club on the Tuesday at 7.30pm, bringing locals together for a night of fundraising and connection.
The final auction takes place on the Saturday at 7.30pm in the table tennis rooms at the Yarrawonga Showgrounds, marking a fitting finale to the week’s events.
“Two people die every day from MND,” Robyn said.
“Many people in the community have been affected by this terrible disease, either directly or indirectly, making this fundraiser vital for raising both awareness and funds for the cause.”
Donations are welcome, and tax-deductible receipts are available for cash contributions.
