Vale Rick Freyer

The local race community was shocked and saddened upon learning the passing of Corowa trainer Rick Freyer last Friday.

The 48-year-old’s death brings Corowa's long and famous racing dynasty to end.

Rick Freyer had trained more than 100 winners since 2005. He served many years for his father Richard Freyer as a right-hand man at Flemington.

Richard Freyer, who trained the luckless Leica Falcon to a fifth placing in the Caulfield Cup and a fourth placing in the Melbourne Cup in 2005, passed away following a battle with cancer in 2017.

Corowa Race Club passed on their condolences in a post on Facebook last week.

“The President and Committee of the Corowa Race Club are so very saddened at the unexpected passing of Rick Freyer this week,” the post read.

“This is the end of the Freyer Racing Dynasty, as Rick, aged 48, is the son of the late Richard Freyer and grandson of the late Jack Freyer.

“The Freyer Stable has been one of the most successful in the SDRA, as for more than a century the Freyer name has been synonymous with training race horses on the border.

“The great horse Leica Falcon, trained by Richard Freyer, ran fourth in the Melbourne Cup is still living, retired on the family farm.

“Our sympathy goes out to Rick’s sister Kylie, Aunt Joy and all other family members.”
