Prof Gardner and Mr Nugent visited the Recovery Hub, Kings Park, Vietnam Veterans’ Commemorative Walk and the Seymour SES unit as a part of a tour to flood-affected communities in Murrindindi, Mitchell and Campaspe shires.
Prof Gardner said the visit to Seymour was an opportunity to speak with residents about their experiences and gain insights from the shire councillors and Mr Nugent.
“Having witnessed the spirit of resilience and volunteerism first-hand, I know that members of the community will continue to rally around each other during this important recovery process,” she said.
The visit allowed residents, businesses, clubs, organisations, volunteers, Community Recovery Committee members, support agencies and the council to discuss the ongoing challenges following the October 2022 floods and the subsequent storms and floods of 2023 and 2024.
Mitchell Shire Council Mayor Louise Bannister said it was an honour and a privilege to host the visit and reflect on the community’s extraordinary resilience.
“The tour provided an opportunity to reflect on all that has been achieved thanks to the significant co-ordination, planning, engagement and collaboration of so many people across our community,” she said.
“There is a clear determination to work together to support each other and to get things done, as well as a commitment to strengthening the way we plan for natural disasters and respond to them when they occur.”
She thanked everyone who shared their experiences, challenges and hopes for with Prof Gardner and Mr Nugent.
