It was a successful day for the Wahgunyah rowers in Bendigo for their first Regatta of the season. The day started off with Joel Tyrrell and Lachy Seymour competing in the Open Single Scull, Joel rowed to a competitive third place in his heat and Lachy held the lead of until the final metres of race, just getting beaten by Corowa Rowing Club’s Jayden Collier. Lachy will be a force to be reckoned with as the season progresses and his fitness improves.
Next up was the C Grade Quad Scull with Pat Mansfield from Yarrawonga rowing with Bryce Stones, Joel and Lachy. They had an easy win in the heat and were looking promising for a win in the final, but an error from the officials meant that they were excluded from race.
Joel and Bryce competed in the C Grade Pair, rowing a strong race to bring home the win against the two Richmond crews.
The final race of the day was the Masters Quad Scull with Yarrawonga’s Pat Mansfield, Rutherglen Lake’s Paul Sommervile , and Corio Bay’s Ian Bridgland teaming up with Joel Tyrrell to row through for the lead in the final metres of the race and take the win.
The great day in Bendigo was closely followed by Wahgunyah rowing clubs open day, with this year’s open day being a special one due to the christening of three new boats.
It was great to see plenty of people come down and see the naming of the new pair called the Bernie Plunket, the new four called the Chris Walliss and the new eight named the Phil Doyle. A BBQ for all followed and it provided everyone with an opportunity to look around the great facilities Wahgunyah Rowing Club has to offer.
This weekend followed with another great regatta. On Saturday Phil Culhane, Joel tyrrell and Bryce stones teamed up with Yarrawonga Rowing Club’s Pat Mansfield and (cox) Lucydna Mansfield to tackle the Head of the Goulburn at Nagambie. In very trying conditions they rowed very well for the 7km distance of the race to come home in 2nd place in the male masters coxed four. With thanks to Corowa rowing club for towing Wahgunyah’s boat to the regatta.
Its been a great start to the season for the club, great to see the local clubs teaming up and all supporting each other. New members are always welcomed and encouraged for enquiries please email wahgunayhrowingclub@outlook.com
