As part of the international charity Wrap With Love Inc., the Corowa Wrap With Love group has contributed more than 7000 handmade wraps and quilts since forming in early 2014.
Wrap With Love Inc. distributes handcrafted wraps, quilts and similar items to people experiencing hardship, cold or trauma.
Every item is provided completely free of charge, and the organisation, run entirely by volunteers, receives no government funding.
It remains proudly non-denominational, non-racist and non-political, relying solely on donations of crafted goods, cash, materials, transport and services.
Wraps cannot be bought, sold, raffled or traded, ensuring each one goes directly to someone who needs it.
This year the Corowa group has sent 144 wraps to the Wrap With Love Sydney hub, where they will be forwarded to vulnerable communities both in Australia and overseas.
Local organiser Bev Bowen said the group continued to grow thanks to the generosity of Corowa residents who donate knitted and crocheted squares.
“We have a huge number of beautiful squares waiting to be assembled into rugs; squares are crocheted or knitted and donations of 8-ply yarn are always welcome,” Bev said.
“Our eldest contributor, Maisie, is 95 years old and has completed 12 rugs this year; she even creates her own squares and kangaroos for the rugs.
“Anyone is welcome to join us. It is a wonderful opportunity for fellowship, creativity and community service.”
The Corowa Wrap With Love volunteers meet at 9.30am on the 1st, 3rd and 4th Mondays of each month at St Mary’s Hall.
There is no membership fee, and newcomers are encouraged to come along to help assemble wraps, share skills or simply enjoy the friendly, welcoming atmosphere.
