Whiteheads Creek-Tarcombe CFA honours members

Captain Michel Becks opened proceedings talking about the history of the brigade, noting that its first meeting was held on May 24, 1946 at the Tarcombe Hall — just over 80 years ago.

While their equipment and the firefighting techniques they use has evolved in that time, one thing remains the same — the selfless spirit of its volunteers and the critical work they perform.

Mr Becks said it was a very nice evening, with around 45 members and their families coming together.

“The Seymour RSL kindly gave us the venue to be used for our awards night, which we appreciate,” he said.

“We had like a sit-down dinner with all the people there before the awards.”

And the medals presented were significant, with the members of the brigade putting in 1155 years of combined service.

“Quite a few of our older members have been in the brigade 40, 50, even 60 years,” Mr Becks said.

Mr Becks said that while it was touching that the brigade attracted so many volunteers, it could always use more.

“Our people are very dedicated, but we're a fairly relaxed brigade,” he said.

“We get along well. Even in a high-stress environment, we can still laugh together.

“Sometimes we might cry, but we’re there for each other.”
