Winery escapes fire disaster

An electric blanket caused the fire in a timely warning to check heating appliances as winter approaches.

In a timely reminder to check the safety of electric blankets, on Rutherglen winery was lucky to escape without injury or too much damage recently.

The master bedroom was engulfed in flames at the Stanton & Killeen Winery’s residence by the time Fire and Rescue arrived on scene.

An electric blanket caught on fire at about 5.00pm on Tuesday, April 29.

A family member used a hose until the arrival of CFA Rutherglen, saving most of the house in Jacks Road.

“It could have been a lot worse if it wasn’t for that family member and the local CFA did a wonderful job,” Rutherglen Police Sergeant Michael Savage said.

Seven fire trucks from the districts of Rutherglen and Corowa attended the scene.
