Khaki Vehicle Enthusiasts Incorporated (KVEI) bring their ex-military vehicle collectors annually to Ball Park Caravan Park, attracting collectors from around Australia and the world.
Jan Thompson, president of KVEI, said most vehicles attending the event were of World War II vintage, including Jeeps, Blitz’s, Dodge Weapons Carriers, Studebakers, and GMC trucks.
The event also attracts members with post-WW2 vehicles including Land Rovers, Saracen armoured cars, Ferret Scout Cars, HUMVEE [Hummer], ACCO Internationals and many others.
“In 1999 we achieved recognition by the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest gathering of Ford GPA amphibious vehicles since the Second World War,” Jan said.
“The 16 vehicles included the famous amphibious Jeep ‘Half-Safe’, which circumnavigated the world during the 1950’s and had been donated to the Guildford Grammar School in Perth.
“In March 2002 we again achieved recognition by the Guinness Book of World Records for the greatest gathering of privately owned Ford and Chev Blitz trucks since 1945.”
The event, held from March 9-16, includes a range of activities across the region.
Visits to Corowa She Shed, Benalla Aviation Museum and Glenview Residential Aged Care in Rutherglen are just a taste of what’s on the schedule.
Veterans and Vehicles Reunited: Club Corowa will host a display of restored vehicles used by the Australian armed forces over the years on Thursday.
A parade from Bangerang Park to the Corowa Showgrounds for a photo shoot and swap meet rounds out the week before their dinner at Club Corowa on Sunday night.
The event was initially organised by Ian Grieve (Qld) and Alan Newton (SA) and was for amphibious Jeeps (Ford Model G.P.A. quarter-ton 4X4 Amphibian).
With so much interest amongst military vehicle enthusiasts it became a large-scale gathering, not only with GPA’s but also other historic military vehicles.
“Corowa was chosen as host town because of its central location, easy river access and rich history,” Jan said.
“Collectors enjoy the wrecking yards and disposal stores in Albury and Wodonga, and there are a variety of shops, wineries and antique venues to make this a family orientated event.
“The townsfolk of Corowa have always welcomed our presence.
“We look forward to returning each year to enjoy their hospitality and support.”
Anyone who would like to help with the site office during the event can contact Jan Thompson on 0412 078 096, or email jan.thompson1@optusnet.com.au.
The site office will be located at the Corowa Showgrounds and will be open from Monday, March 9, to Friday, March 13, with a few hours also on Saturday.
