Corowa Police will allege a bag containing 543.7 grams of cannabis was thrown from a car boot as police were about to search the car last Sunday afternoon.
The 44-year-old Victorian driver’s license holder was charged with drugs and disqualified driver offences, and bail was refused.
The alleged offender will receive further traffic infringements for displaying illegal plates and driving an unregistered vehicle.
The man was observed by police in Honour Avenue Corowa driving a silver hatch back and then found him parked on Geo Way Road.
Police stopped and spoke to the driver who admitted his number plates were not from his vehicle. Checks revealed the car to be unregistered, uninsured and the driver disqualified.
“While police were collecting gloves from the police vehicle to search the vehicle, the male attended the rear of the car and threw a white plastic bag into nearby bushes,” Sergeant Stephen Marshall said.
Alleged stealing, trespassing and abuse
Police have had continuous issues with a 36-year-old former Corowa resident stealing and trespassing recently. It will be alleged that the man attended Waldrons Supa IGA on at least three occasions stealing $100 worth of items.
On June 11, the same man became abusive at Corowa Base Hospital and failed to comply with a move on direction. Later in the evening, he trespassed at Corowa Police Station and was subsequently charged with both matters.
The male was conditionally bailed however breached this bail on June 14 and was subsequently arrested and bail refused. He was later given conditional bail to appear at Corowa Local Court on July 31.
Long weekend behaviour
Over the King’s Birthday long weekend police were in an out of hotels all weekend at night as patrons continued activities after participating in the Roam Winery Walkabout.
Utilising CCTV from house, local businesses and body worn video from earlier in the night at licensed premises, police were able to identify two males of interest regarding property damage.
A 32-year-old and a 34-year-old were identified with the 32-year-old issued with a field court attendance notice to attend Corowa Local Court on July 31.
“Generally, most licensed premises had minimal issues however on the Sunday night a couple of Corowa locals smashed the windows of a number of vehicles in Parliament Street and Alfred Street, Corowa,” Sgt Marshall said.
Coffee with a Cop

“Our community operates both sides of the Murray River and so Corowa and Rutherglen Police will be in attendance,” Sgt Marshall said.
Police aware of community frustration
Corowa Police appreciate the frustration of locals when it comes to contacting the police and are aware of the numerous references on Facebook to “never around.”
“This is not a new issue and the public needs to understand it is a common issue in rural areas when police crews cover large areas and are required to travel between multiple towns,” Sgt Stephen Marshall said.
“Corowa Police on any given shift cover Howlong, Corowa, Mulwala, Oaklands and Urana and all the villages in between. Rutherglen Police have similar issues at times covering Rutherglen, Wahgunyah, Barnawartha, Chiltern all the way to Beechworth.
Both organisations have police assistance lines 131444 for non-urgent matters and Crime Stoppers 1300 888 000 for information you want to pass onto police.”
Sgt Marshall said in the case of requiring urgent response 000 will reach local police every time no matter their location.
“If you visit Corowa or Rutherglen Police Station and we are not there, make contact with the larger stations of Albury and Wodonga respectively and they will pass a message onto us,” he said.
