The school’s story began in 1874, when local resident William H. Oram successfully petitioned the minister of public instruction for a school in the Pine Lodge district. A five-acre site was secured, and in February 1876, State School No. 1713 opened its doors to 56 students in a simple pine and iron building.
As the surrounding farming and orchard community grew, so did the school. Over the decades, classrooms were added, the grounds expanded and facilities improved. Even through floods, the Great Depression and changing times, the school remained a constant source of learning and community spirit. Working bees, fundraising events and the generosity of local families ensured the school continued to thrive.
The second half of the 20th century brought significant growth, including a new six-classroom building in 1965, sporting facilities, bus shelters, playgrounds and the introduction of computers. Community generosity remained central to the school’s success, from the memorial playground built in 1976 to the creation of the current school logo by former parent Betty Jeffery.
In recent years, Shepparton East Primary School has continued to evolve, with modern learning spaces, accessibility upgrades, the Peter Copulos Sporting Pavilion and Trade Shed, new inclusive playgrounds and contemporary learning environments. Throughout the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the school community demonstrated remarkable resilience while continuing to support every student.
Today, Shepparton East Primary School is recognised as one of regional Victoria's leading government primary schools, combining outstanding academic achievement with a strong commitment to wellbeing, inclusion and community. As the school celebrates 150 years in 2026, it proudly honours the students, staff, families and volunteers whose dedication has shaped its remarkable story. While much has changed since 1876, the school's purpose remains the same — to provide every child with the opportunity to learn, grow and belong.
