The AFL North East Border held its best and fairest gala for the women’s football league on Friday, with Murray Felines players Mietta Habits and Makenzie Lewis both taking home hardware on the night.

The first award of the night went to Feline player Makenzie Lewis who won the Under 16 goal kicking award. Makenzie kicked a record tally of 45 goals for the season, narrowly beating out team mate Sophie Nicholson.
In the Under 16 Best and Fairest vote count, star Feline player Mietta Habits polled consistently throughout the season to take out the League Under 16 Best and Fairest count.
Mietta featured in a number of best on ground displays throughout the season with her signature dashes along the wing and taking every opponent on.
She had a nervous wait during the counting for the last two rounds where she didn’t play, but held on to take out the award.
Yasmine Budic from the Felines finished equal third in the count, only two points behind Mietta.
In the Open Women’s vote count, Tahlia Simpson and Emily Nicholson polled very well for the night and featured right up on the leader’s board. Zali Spencer made a cameo appearance on the leader’s board with a best on field display in her one match for the Felines during the season.
In all, the open team players polled consistently well for each match, demonstrating the enormous improvement the team made during the season and proving they could be competitive against all the teams that made the finals.
The Felines vote count and award night will be held at Barkly Park on 24 August.
