Lawn White have started the season with two good performances and gave Corowa a taste of defeat. It was nip and tuck early as both teams traded sets. Lawn White that found their rhythm first and settled well to comprehensively win the last two sets before the mixed sets to give them a 4-2 and 13 game advantage.
Darrell Spencer and Marianne Spencer gave Corowa some hope when they defeated the highly fancied pairing of Andrew Pyta and Janelle Hartwig but White steadied and won the last two sets to record a runaway win. Wendy Hogan (3 sets) and Shaun Ablazej lead the way for White and it was left to Darrell Spencer (3 sets), Craig Spencer and Marianne Spencer to add some respectability to the scoreboard for Corowa.
The Lawn Blue and Wang Hardcourt clash was a game of “what if and if only” as it was an absorbing match and one in which the result wasn’t reflective of the closeness of the match throughout. Lawn took the initial two sets 8-6 then Hardcourt managed an 8-3 win. Lawn however, continued to sneak over the line in the close ones winning the next three sets 8-6, 8-6 and 8-7. Lawn Blue had their noses in front with the mixed sets to come and they continued their good form winning all three mixed sets to run out comfortable winners on the scoreboard. Jono Keys was impressive for Blue and with good support roles from Ken Parker and Emily Brown Lawn held on for a victory, it was left to Hardcourts Andy Lucas, Denise Goodwin and Lynne Shepherd to fly the colours for Hardcourt.

The Wang Hardcourt - Wahgunyah Blue match was topsy turvy from the start and result reflected the evenness of the two teams (a draw). Wahgunyah Blue’s men had complete control of their matches while the Hardcourt women were in total domination of the Wahgunyah women which by the time the mixed sets began Wahgunyah held a two-game advantage.
The game was blown apart when Wahgunyah’s Tony Jones and Jackie Seymour won 8-0 which made it hard for Hardcourt to make up the leeway. To their credit, they didn’t hang their heads and dug deep to win the two remaining sets to force a draw. Tony Jones, Glen Bobbin and Mark Webb were Wahgunyah’s best while Marianna Hines, Maria Pulvirenti and Lucas Alexander were impressive for Hardcourt. Wahgunyah Red have started their defence of last year’s flag in impressive form with a win over another flag fancy Rutherglen.
Wahgunyah Red’s men overshadowed the Rutherglen men. Rutherglen had the upper hand in the women’s sets which positioned Wahgunyah ahead by 11 games heading into the mixed sets where Wahgunyah managed to stretch their lead run away easy winners.
Jesse Johnstone, Ethan Palmer and Kylie Greig were consistent for Wahgunyah while Rachel Crawford, Samantha Mase and Maddie Pianto were composed under pressure for Rutherglen.
Everton Red and Myrrhee fought out a thrilling draw with the result in the balance until the last point was won. The early sets were split and when Everton’s Steve Cole and Alan Wood won. They put Everton in front close to the mixed sets, but Myrrhee’s Robyn Oliver and Cathy Van Berlo held on to win a tense tie break to ensure teams headed into the three mixed sets with the scores level. Myrrhee’s Rob Seymour and Cathy Van Berlo out of the blocks and gave Myrrhe the advantage with an 8-5 victory while the other two sets were engaged in close and enthralling matches. Both went to the wire and Everton hung on to win two nail biting tie break sets which put the final score line at Everton 5-60 and Myrrhee 4-61.
Good players were easy to find for both sides, but Everton’s Ben Kneebone, Steve Cole and Julie Deretic stood out and Myrrhee’s Di Griffin, Cathy Van Berlo and Rob Seymour just shaded their teammates. Everton Blue overwhelmed Boorhaman on Saturday and broke their spirit when they claimed a couple of early tie break sets. Boorhaman never recovered while Everton Blue went from strength to strength and ran out comfortable winners. Russell Bennett, Rowan Kneebone and Sam Bennett were best for Everton while evergreen Shirley Fuller, Sally O’Donoghue and Jane McInnes never stopped trying for Boorhaman.
Section 3
Wooragee (Skip Peiper, Ebony Boote, Annika Knoth, Leah) have dashed Chiltern Red’s (Grace Birthisel, Molly Williams, Ben Beattie, Millie Beatie) hopes of starting the season with two easy wins on Saturday. Wooragee now have the added pressure as they sit on top of the ladder and are now the hunted. Wahgunyah Black (Jake Saville, Priscilla Hill, Corey Hill, Brodie Molnar) have returned to the winners list against Chiltern White (Amy Ziebarth, Bridie Murphy, Sarah Birthisel, Jamie) after last week’s disastrous start to the season. Chiltern start well taking the first set, but it was all downhill from there as Wahgunyah Black had a comfortable victory.
