Corowa Red have convincingly defeated Wang Hardcourt at Ball Park to set up an enthralling last round where the 4 top teams play one another, and ladder positions are undecided.
Corowa blew Hardcourt away early and from there Hardcourt were never a chance to close the gap and Corowa ran out comfortable winners.
Mario Pane was outstanding for Hardcourt winning 2 sets and losing the other in a tiebreak, unfortunately for Mario, Hardcourt didn’t have enough consistent contributors to put any pressure on Corowa.
Corowa’s was a team effort and they will need to perform to that standard again next week if they are to retain second position on the ladder.
Wang Lawn cruised to victory over Chiltern at Merriwa Park and have given themselves an outside chance of claiming second position on the ladder but it will take a huge effort and an ounce of luck for that to happen.
Chiltern battled against the odds all day and kept Lawn honest with a
never say die attitude which was typified by Jarrod McKinnar who has the dubious honour of not winning a set for the entire season.
It wasn’t his commitment that was lacking it was just the fact he played No.1 all year and ran up against the competitions’ best players.
Section 2
Everton Blue have the bragging rights over fellow co-tenants Everton White and in doing so have sewn up 3rd place on the ladder.
Everton Blue have had a consistent season as opposed to last year’s outstanding one and have eased their way into contention but will need a huge improvement if they are to trouble top team Wahgunyah Red. Everton White have struggled for numbers all year and their results reflect the fact that haven’t been able to field the same team week
in and week out.
Everton Blue were in control of the co-tenant battle early and the evenness of the Blue side finally took its toll on White who just couldn’t sustain their efforts for long periods of time.
Jo Barron, Julie Deretic and Mel Hellebrand were great contributors for White while Sam Bennett, Noel Kneebone and Dook Gibb shone for Blue team.
Wahgunyah Red continue to roll along relentlessly as no one seems to be able contain the Wahgunyah juggernaut and this week it was Corowa that were swept away effortlessly.
It appears only nerves or injury will stop Wahgunyah Red in taking home the cup.
Corowa were no match for Wahgunyah, it’s their ability to sustain pressure for the entire set with aggressive and precision play that Corowa had no answers for.
Travis “Old” McDonald and Adam Corcoran are proving they are cornerstone of this team, if they perform well the rest of the team gathers in confidence to ensure victory is there’s.
Ladder positions don’t always predict outcomes and on Saturday this was correct.
On paper and ladder position Wang Hardcourt should have had a comfortable win over Wahgunyah Blue but the Blue team are on a roll towards the end of the season and they have caused the weekends upset. The teams traded sets, the Hardcourt winning the women’s sets and Wahgunyah the men’s sets which meant Wahgunyah held a slender 2 game advantage heading into the mixed sets.
When Wahgunyah’s inform combination of Glen Bobbin and Fiona Rose won 8-1 then Tony Jones and Priscilla Hill won 8-1 the result was beyond doubt.
Hardcourt sit 3 points clear of Boorhaman in 4th spot and need to hope that Wahgunyah Red continue to perform at their best and that they win at least a couple of sets to ensure their spot in the finals.
Tomo Moriya, Kath Trainer and Marianna Hines (3 sets) were unstoppable for Hardcourt and with a little luck in the men’s sets the result could have been different.
Rutherglen have turned to play and have all but dashed Boorhaman’s hopes of playing finals with a dazzling performance of power tennis from the Rutherglen men while the Boorhaman women had the upperhand which set up an enthralling finish to the match.
Maddi Pianto and Josh Quick (3 sets) and Sheila and Peter Smith (3 sets) put the match out of Boorhaman’s reach when they won their mixed sets easily.
Hayley Thomsom, Shirley Fuller and Sally O’Donohue (3 sets) were impressive for Boorhaman and the defeat wasn’t laying at their feet.
Section 3
Wahgunyah Blue (Jake Saville, Tye Callow, Matt Vogel, Liam Hill) have gained the ascendancy and now have the wood over their closest rivals Wahgunayah Red (Andrew Palmer, Peter Treberly, Brett Skinner, Kane Palmer) as the finals loom.
The 2 decisive sets for Blue involved Tye Callow who is developing into a consistent and a thinking tennis player while Brett Skinner and Kane Palmer performed best for Wahgunyah Red.
It appears these 2 teams will be the main forces in the Section 3 finals and with a little luck the tables and fortunes could be easily reversed.
Wooragee (Liam Ladbrook, Skip Peiper, Ebony Boote, William Elhave) defeated Chiltern (Hamish Smyth, Molly Williams, Bridie Murphy, Amy Ziebarth) comfortably on Saturday and have ensured themselves 3rd place on the ladder.
Chiltern’s season has ended and with a big off season of practice and coaching I’m sure they will return a different outfit next year and push all teams in Section 3 and they steadily improved throughout
the season.
Wooragee live to fight another day and the world is their oyster.
