A big weekend of rowing started with the Junior School Boy State Championships held at Nagambie. Corowa members representing their high schools featured Corowa High - Liam Fitzgerald year 10, year 8 students competing in the year 9 single scull Lachie Hogan and Brodie Julian and Rutherglen High, Spencer Holland.

First race of the day featured Brodie and Lachie lining up in the heat with five starters.
Brodie got out fast taking the lead with Lachie sitting in third place at the 500m mark.
The second half of the race saw Brodie continue his great form as Lachie closed the gap on second place with the top three moving through to the A final.
Spencer was in the second heat and showed great speed to take the lead against the inform Hawthorn sculler.
Spencer rowed a controlled race to lead all the way and earn a place in the final featuring the best six scullers.
The year 10 event saw Liam line up against 5 scullers in the preliminary with scullers racing for lanes in the final.
Liam rowed a well-timed race as he eased over the line in 2nd place and into the final.
The first final of the day featured the 3 Corowa scullers competing in the year 9 single.
The Hawthorn sculler made his move after 100m and reversed the position on Spencer in the heat to lead all the way for the win.
Spencer was comfortably in 2nd place with Brodie in 3rd, Lachie worked hard for his best row to finish in 5th place, a great effort by the year 8 boys.
Liam lined up in his final with 5 starters, after an even start the Hailebury sculler took the lead with Liam in third place.
The race heated up in the last 250m with Liam lifting his rating moving into 2nd place and closing the gap on the leader.
With a last effort Liam closed the gap and in a race to the line fell 1m short of the gold but a great silver medal.
Sunday’s racing began with windy conditions in Ballarat.
The clubs first event was the Female D grade single scull featuring Emily Tidd and Bella Heagney in the first heat.
With an entry list of 29 scullers only top 2 moved into the final.
Nothing separated the 2 Corowa scullers and the scullers from Geelong and Richmond with 250m to go.
With a last effort the Geelong sculler took the lead from Bella with Emily 4th and the Richmond sculler 3rd with less than 2 lengths separating all four scullers.
Clancy Tomlinson was up next, also needing a top 2 finish to move into the final with Bella.
Clancy was rowing well in the conditions as she moved through the field and in a fighting finish claimed the all-important 2nd place.
The clubs last entry in the scull was Liz Sandow who has worked hard at training to improve her technique in the single.
Liz rowed a great race passing half the field to finish strongly in 4th place.
The final featured 8 scullers with Emily and Clancy lining up against a quality field.
The race was evenly placed at the 500m mark with Bella moving into 3rd and Clancy into 5th place. As the pace picked up Bella made her move and in a surge to the line Bella finished in 2nd place by 2 meters while Clancy pressed hard finishing in 4th place.
A great result by all scullers who will now put their efforts into the Head of the School Girls regatta in Geelong where they will represent their schools.
The Under 15 quad events were combined with the Corowa male crew Spencer Holland, Brodie Julian, Marcus Maclean, Lachie Hogan Cox Imogen Tomlinson claimed the win in a fast time for the conditions.
The female crew consisting of Emily Price, Sommers Hogan, Adelaide Robb, Eva Broad and Cox Adelyn Holland were too strong for the Hamilton College crew to lead all the way for a comfortable win.
The afternoons events were put on hold as the notorious Ballarat winds picked up.
After a delay in racing for one hour the referee called off the regatta due to the rough conditions. The rowers and parents were disappointed but that’s how it goes in rowing.
Thanks to all the parents who turned up and helped over the two days a lot of great learnings were achieved as the club prepare for the final 2 weekends of racing for the season.
Crews will be training hard for HOSG regatta that will feature R.H.S Taylah Storer and Emily Price in the year 10 double scull.
Galen year 10 student Emily Tidd in the year 10 single, Xavier H.S Bella Heagney, C.H.S Clancy Tomlinson and Sommers Hogan in the year 9 single scull.
Final Regatta for our season will be Footscray and Essendon regattas. Ensure your names are on the board.
