Corowa A grade traveled to Urana Rd to face a dangerous New City side that always seemed to grow a leg whenever it was time to play Corowa.
Missing opening bowler Nick Grant, who had somehow convinced his soon to be wife Georgia that LIV Golf in Adelaide was the perfect Valentine's getaway, Corowa won the toss and elected to bat.
Opener Blake Keenes was joined by Jesse Maloney, who was back in the side after a 3-week trip to Japan where he mastered the art of Japanese Meditation (Zen).
It didn't take long for Maloney to prove he had mastered the art of Koans as he tried to drive the new ball on the up over cover on a tacky slow surface, giving himself plenty of time to Zazen before having to field.
Keenes was joined by Lane who continued on his merry way.
Lane's form has been a huge factor for the Corowa resurgence in 2026, and that continued as he and Keenes combined for a 48 run second wicket partnership before Lane was dismissed by a clever change of pace from New City opener Hayden Roberts.
Going into the first drinks break at 2/60, Corowa were pleased with their start, knowing the conditions that were presented.
We can't confirm what New City discussed at drinks but whatever it was it worked, as Corowa lost 5/30 in the space of 8 overs.
That left Corowa 7/92 and not only in huge trouble in this fixture but also their season at the cliff's edge, like many people on the 14th of February each year Corowa were looking for a knight in shining armour.
That knight was Paddy Lavis, or as he told us at 11pm Saturday night, Shikhar Dhawan.
Paddy, who was only having his second bat of the season due to breaking his arm on the Monsoon's dance floor in Darwin in late 2025 while in the NT playing footy, wrestled momentum back with a crisp run a ball 37, supported by Hamish Starr as the other end.
Paddy was dismissed for 37 trying to hit Shayan Shayan back to Lavington Sports Ground
When Ben Mitchell was dismissed two balls later trying to sweep Fawood Malook over the road so he could go say hello to his local Tyrepower Pro, Corowa were left reeling at 9/148.
Mark Athanitis strolled to crease with purpose, completely ignoring instructions from his skipper who was walking back to the shed, to join Hamish Starr.
The next 45 minutes had to be seen to be believed.
With 6 fours and 5 sixes Hamish Starr had moved to 91 off 71 and the total score had moved to 231.
Starr and Athanitis combined for a Provincial club record 10th wicket partnership to see the score move from under par to over par.
Starr's clean and precise hitting, mostly through the V, saw him hit sixes over mid-off and dead straight multiple times.
The New City bowlers had no answers and Starr's Corowa teammates watched on in near disbelief.
Many got the most excitement they would see on Valentines Day from Starr's incredible knock.
As you could imagine New City needed to do something to halt Corowa's momentum and they did just that with one of the best lunchtime spreads CAW have seen.
The hotdogs, sausage rolls and meat pies probably spent 7 minutes too long in the oven, but who can blame the chef as they were probably out the back helping the deep mid-off fieldsman find the 156g kookaburra.
After the break Corowa tried to carry the momentum into the bowling innings.
Eli Lavis showed why he is labelled the most exciting young quick in CAW once again with a fiery opening spell.
New City did work their way to 2/61 off 12 overs and the game was well and truly in the balance until Mark Athanitis, who was still riding high from his partnership with Starr and the high of a hydration gel, ripped apart the New City middle order.
Claiming 5/13 with 3 maidens, Athanitis bowled 10 overs straight from the Lavington end, the same town he got lost in trying to navigate to cricket from Thurgoona only 5 hours beforehand.
Eli Lavis picked up 2/23 in what was a great reward for some brilliant bowling.
New City eventually being dismissed for 115 in the 35th over to seal a very important bonus point victory for Corowa which moves them into the top 6 for the first time this season.
Corowa will be at home next week against East Albury, who sit 7th on the CAW ladder and only one win behind Corowa.
This will be a massive matchup in determining who plays finals this year.
Corowa will head into the contest brimming with confidence and hoping to keep the momentum rolling.
B-Grade
Corowa’s B Grade side has marched on with a clinical 8-wicket victory over New City at Ball Park, maintaining their impressive momentum as the finals approach.
Despite an early injury scare, the Corowa bowling unit proved too disciplined for the visitors, eventually chasing down a modest target with ease.
After losing the toss and being sent into the field, Corowa’s plans were immediately thrown into disarray when one of their only two specialist pace bowlers went down with an injury.
However, Lenny Power stepped up brilliantly to fill the void.
Power spearheaded the early attack, tearing through the top order to claim 3/17 and leaving New City reeling at 4/52.
From there, the "Spin Syndicate" took over on a responsive Ball Park surface:
Cal Corcoran was the pick of the slow bowlers, claiming 2 wickets.
Jack Eales, Leroy Chester, Tyler Abley, and Harry Norman all chipped in with a wicket apiece.
The relentless pressure saw New City bundled out for 92 in the 37th over.
The run chase was a business-like affair.
Despite losing Daniel Athanitis (10) early with the score at 20, Corowa never looked troubled.
Lenny Power capped off a brilliant all-round day with a brisk 31, taking the score to 50 before his departure.
The inform Kade Wilson (29*) and Austin Ross-Anderson (19*) then combined in a composed unbeaten partnership to steer Corowa home in just the 17th over.
This victory sets the stage for a defining three-week stretch.
Corowa is scheduled to face three consecutive Top 6 opponents to close out the regular season, beginning with a massive clash against East Albury at Alexandra Park this Saturday.
C-Grade
A batting collapse saw Corowa C-Grade (Division 1) rolled by finals aspirant Lavington at the neutral Lowe Square, Howlong.
Chasing 121, Corowa were well on track at 2/61 after openers Baxter Macfarlane (22, three boundaries) and Caleb Kuschert (20, four boundaries) got the side off to a good start.
Promoted to No.2 Macfarlane’s boundaries included a cracking straight six while Kuschert’s cameo came off just 10 balls.
But upon the introduction of Lavington’s two veteran medium pacers, Corowa were all out for 69 with the duo – who garnered 6/13 and 3/9 respectively – piling on the pressure with a quality mix of accurate swing bowling.
Earlier, the day had started positively when John Conroy and keeper Macfarlane combined for a run-out off the first ball.
Kuschert claimed two scalps while spinners Blayre Smith (4/13) and Archie Rhodes (1/30) were dangerous.
Cody Kuschert chipped in with a nice caught-and-bowled as wickets fell regularly while Ollie Collins (mid-off), Dan Osborne (mid-wicket) and Rhodes (square leg) held onto nice catches.
But despite keeping Lavington well contained, Corowa were left to rue a missed chance to consolidate second and will have to bounce back quickly as they take on runaway ladder leaders St Pat’s at home this week.
Under 16s
The Under 16 clash between Corowa and East Albury is delicately balanced after an intriguing opening day at Ball Park.
In a high stakes battle for ladder supremacy, Corowa grinded out a solid total, finishing their 40 overs at 6/163.
After losing the toss and being sent in to bat, Corowa’s openers Lenny Power and Rhylee Barber weathered the early new-ball pressure.
While Barber fell with the score at 14, his departure brought Austin Ross-Anderson to the crease.
The pair took control of the middle session, looking comfortable as they navigated the East Albury attack to reach 75 after 20 overs.
However, the momentum shifted immediately after the drinks break when a lapse in communication saw Ross-Anderson run out for a well-made 30.
Despite the setback, Lenny Power remained the anchor of the innings.
He reached a deserved half-century, eventually falling for 56 - an aggressive knock highlighted by four boundaries and a towering six.
Following Power’s dismissal at 3/105, Corowa looked to accelerate, Harry Norman provided stability with a vital 34.
Eli Lavis added a "quick-fire" 18 to push the total toward 130.
Late contributions from Charlie Hall (7), Jake Witherden (2*), and Cam Abley (1*) ensured Corowa batted out their full allocation.
While 163 is a defendable score, the Corowa bowling unit faces a tough task against a potent East Albury lineup with early wickets the key next week.

Black
After losing the toss, Corowa was sent into the field as Baranduda Silver elected to bat.
From the outset, the Corowa attack ensured the competition’s top side never settled at the crease.
The breakthrough came in just the third over when Oli Mathews struck, finding the edge with a sharp catch taken behind by Abe Spencer.
That early wicket set the tone for the innings as Corowa applied relentless pressure.
Cal Corcoran was superb with the ball, claiming two key wickets, while Archie Rhodes led the charge with three scalps in a standout performance.
Will Torney chipped in with one wicket, and Leo Davis marked his return from injury in style, collecting two important breakthroughs.
A special mention went to Mathews for his spectacular catch at square leg off the bowling of Rhodes - a moment of brilliance that further dented Baranduda’s resistance.
Corowa’s disciplined effort saw Baranduda Silver dismissed for just 64 runs, capping off a clinical performance in the field.
With 12 overs remaining in the day, Corowa set about building a strong foundation with the bat.
Cal Corcoran (20) and Jackson Barber (10) provided a steady start, putting early runs on the board.
Oli Mathews contributed 11 before becoming one of the three wickets to fall.
At stumps, Corowa sits well placed at 3/59, with Jagger Doody unbeaten on 8 and Archie Rhodes 1 not out.
Corowa will return looking to pile on the runs and force Baranduda back in to bat as they aim to press home their advantage.
Blue
Corowa lost the toss and were sent into the field for day 1 of their 2-day game against Howlong.
Despite a strong start and a couple of early wickets some dropped catches allowed the Howlong middle order to get set and they cashed in.
Some fantastic individual efforts from all individual bowlers were unable to be backed up in the field in admittedly difficult conditions.
Howlong posting a monstrous 176 for victory, laying down a challenge for the boys next weekend.
Lucas Tait and Ollie Bedford the pick of the bowlers although all contributed.
Under 12s
Division 1
Corowa Black 5/121(20) defeated St Patricks 8/46(20)
Tex Rhodes starred with the ball with two wickets and conceding no runs off his two overs.
Bill Smith also contributed well, taking one wicket and conceding one run from his two overs.
Tyler Mullavey (27*) and Jake Rhodes (18*) top scored for Corowa, both retiring after facing their allotted 20 balls.
Division 2
White
Saturday was a true test for Corowa White as we faced the top-of-the-table Baranduda.
With three key players - Archer, Moritz, and Albert - absent due to illness and other commitments, we knew we’d have to dig deep.
Their absence meant a smaller squad and fewer experienced bowlers on hand, but the team rallied together and showed incredible adaptability, stepping up in every aspect of the game.
Winning the toss at Morris Park, we chose to field first.
Every player took responsibility, and our bowling attack was both disciplined and determined.
Benji opened the bowling, sending down 3 overs with tight lines and conceding just 17 runs.
Jack followed up with 3 overs for 23 runs, displaying consistency and keeping the pressure on.
Johan bowled 2 overs, giving away only 16 runs and nearly snagging a wicket with a near-miss catch at mid-off.
Lachie Hamilton contributed 3 overs for 15 runs, and Taz delivered 3 overs for 23. Rory, Locky N and Fletcher rounded out the attack, each bowling 2 over and keeping Baranduda’s batters on their toes.
Although we didn’t manage to take a wicket, our fielding was exceptional. The highlight was two dramatic runouts.
These moments brought cheers from the crowd and proved how our teamwork is growing stronger each week.
Baranduda finished their innings at 2 for 161 after 20 overs, setting a formidable target.
During the break, we encouraged the team to run with more daring between the wickets and to protect the stumps - lessons learned from Baranduda’s impressive score.
Our batting innings began with Jack and Johan facing a rapid opening spell. Jack stood tall, making 11 runs from 22 balls, while Johan scored 9 from 18, showing great determination.
Locky Nixon added 7 runs, keeping the innings steady.
Then came one of the day’s standout moments: Lachie Hamilton, seeing the ball like a beach ball, struck boundaries all around the ground, finishing on 29 not out from just 15 balls.
Taz continued the momentum with another solid performance, scoring 8 not out, including a well-timed cover drive.
Rory and Fletcher closed out the innings with 8 and 3 not out, respectively, helping us reach 6 for 86 after 16 overs.
Even though the scoreboard didn’t reflect a win, our performance marked a huge improvement.
Our fielding was sharper than ever, our batting showed more intent and resilience, and every player took on extra responsibility in the absence of our usual stars.
This match was proof that when we work together, we can take on any challenge.
Special thanks to Mark for umpiring and to the parents for their enthusiastic support and delicious snacks.
Let’s keep building on this momentum - next week is the grudge match against Corowa Blue.
Blue
The boys (and girl) travelled to take on North Albury and test themselves on Friday night.
Sent in to bowl the fielding was tight and the bowling was stump-to-stump but North Albury done a great job protecting their wickets.
The improvement was on display with all bowlers doing a great job restricting the home team to only 84 runs, a fantastic effort especially for debutant Lainey Corcoran showing the boys how it’s done.
The team started well Dusty Closter making his best score of 16 and The Chad Corcoran belting 20 putting Corowa in a good position to finish.
Supported well by all other batters it came down to Charlie Lyons and Seb Drew but despite needing 14 from the last 12 balls they fell 2 short.
A great game for all involved and again a lot of lessons for the youngest team in the competition.
