Yarrawonga’s B Grade side produced a courageous performance in Sunday’s grand final, falling agonisingly short against Lavington, 62–60, after an intense period of extra time.
The Pigeons made a confident start and led 13–12 at quarter-time before extending their advantage to 25–22 at the main break. Lavington responded strongly in the third term, taking a 39–36 lead into the final quarter.
Yarrawonga refused to surrender, fighting back to level the scores at 52-all when the final whistle sounded. The drawn result sent the game into overtime, with five minutes played at each end.
Goal shooter Ellie Dickins and goal attack Sarah Moore were outstanding for Yarrawonga, shooting accurately under enormous pressure throughout the contest. Their composure helped keep the Pigeons in the game until the final moments.
Emily McNamara worked tirelessly through centre, while Alisha Leslie and Kristy Davis shared the wing attack role and provided plenty of drive into the goal circle. Jaclyn Oswald delivered a determined four-quarter performance at wing defence.
At the defensive end, Lauren Nolan applied relentless pressure at goal keeper, supported by Grace Stillard at goal defence. Kira Dickins also made an important contribution when introduced into the defensive circle during the second half.
Shani Dickins, Grace Eales and Emma Sinclair completed the Yarrawonga squad and provided valuable support from the sidelines throughout the gripping contest.
Despite Yarrawonga’s tremendous effort, Lavington overcame its nerves during the overtime period and held on to claim the gold medal by two goals.
It was a heartbreaking result for the Pigeons, but the players can be enormously proud of the determination, composure and fighting spirit they displayed on grand final day.
