Rutherglen made the short trip to Chiltern this week for a much-anticipated clash with their arch-rivals and were met with perfect autumn conditions on the TDFL’s largest ground.
The Cats got off to a strong start, dominating centre clearances thanks to the efforts of Reed Bonat, Martin Brennan and Matt Tanner.
Their work in the midfield provided plenty of opportunities for the forwards, who relished the open space and one-on-one contests.
Tom Kilpatrick led the forward line with purpose, clunking strong marks and finishing with three goals.
His ability to either take the mark or bring the ball to ground created opportunities for the small forwards to capitalise, with James Tanner’s forward pressure and positioning seeing him hit the scoreboard as well.
Heading into the final term with a healthy lead, Rutherglen knew Chiltern wouldn’t go down without a fight. True to form, the home side lifted their intensity, but the Cats’ defence stood tall under pressure.
Jarryd Hatton was outstanding in a shutdown role on one of the league’s premier forwards, Doolan, keeping him goalless and earning best-on-ground honours.
Hatton was well supported by Khris Willet and Mitch Cofield, who continually repelled Chiltern’s forward surges.
It was a determined and complete team performance that saw Rutherglen emerge with a well-deserved 16-point victory.
Next week, the Cats return home to Barkly Park to take on another strong opponent in Beechworth.
Awards: Complete Body Craft –Jarryd Hatton, Poachers Paradise Hotel – Thomas Kilpatrick, Rutherglen Convent Brewery – Khris Willett, Club Corowa – Mitch Cofield, Rutherglen Pizza – Tyler Ferraro.
Reserves
Cats 14.9.93 def Chiltern 4.9.33
Chiltern came out hard in the first 10 minutes, but the HB line of Lawrence, Williams and Rhodes did not let a ball past them - the team finished the quarter nicely kicking 4.2-0.2.
The second quarter was an even contest with some nice ball movement from both sides but accuracy in front of goal gave the Cats a handy 40-point lead at HT 7.3-0.5.
Chiltern came out hard again in the third kicking the first three goals in quick fashion.
The boys made the decision themselves to lock down on their opponents to steady the contest.
Kicking two late goals in the quarter, one of those after the siren from the boundary from Reid really got the boys up going into the break. 9.7- 3.7 at third quarter time.
The Cats came out on fire in the last lead by the Ruck duo of Weller/Tafft dominating in the centre square and also up forward with five goals between them.
Kicking six goals in the last the Cats ran away winning comfortably.
Awards: Club Corowa – Jordan Rhodes, Howlong Shearing Services – Jack Reid, Baker Seed Co – Sam Lawrence, Rutherglen Pizza – Hayden Weller, Coaches Award – Lucas Tafft.
Under 17s

It was dominant display by Rutherglen U17s in a big win over Chiltern.
In sunny but chilly conditions, our Under 17s came out firing—holding Chiltern scoreless until well into the second quarter, when they finally broke through with the first of their two goals for the game.
The Cats’ backline was outstanding, consistently repelling attacks and transitioning the ball back to the forwards with skill and confidence.
More accurate kicking this week saw the boys steadily build the score across all four quarters, with goal scoring shared generously throughout the team.
Forwards Snowy Barnes, Harry Chandler, and Daniel Ryland were particularly impressive, contributing 17 goals between them.
A commanding lead gave the coaches the opportunity to rotate players through different positions, resulting in clear development and growth across the team. Jaylen Cracknell stood out in a lockdown role, while several younger players stepped up impressively.
The team executed the game plan with discipline and unity, placing them in a strong position as they look ahead to next weekend’s clash against Beechworth at Barkly Park.

The Under 14 Cats travelled to Chiltern to take on the Swans, looking for another win on the road.
Despite having most of the play in the first quarter, goals were hard to come by.
The Cats scored five points, and the Swans had some confidence that the scores were close. Erik Fuge and Ben Walsh were strong all day in defence and helped repel any Chiltern attacks on goal. Captain Elijah McFarlane put on an intercept marking clinic taking some strong marks in defence.
In the second quarter Rutherglen managed to score a goal thanks to Ben Pagan-Saunders on the end of strong work from the centre through Nate Kuschert and Brayden McInnes in the Ruck.
At half time six points separated the sides. In the third quarter Max Chandler was lively and scored two goals and Noah Cracknell also kicked a nice running goal.
Chiltern also added to their goal tally, and at the final change Rutherglen led by just seven points.
Cody O’Donoghue stepping up from the Under 12s had a great match and was hard for Chiltern to handle in the final quarter.
Elijah McFarlane continued his excellent form scoring a running goal to give the Cats some breathing space. Ben Pagan-Saunders was calm in front of goals, slotting the sealer.
By the end of the final quarter Rutherglen recorded a 20-point win.
Next week the Cats take on Beechworth at Barkly Park as they aim to build into the season and move their way up the ladder.
Good luck Cats.

Excellent game from the girls this week. Each player worked hard in their position to keep possession or turn over the ball.
The team’s mid-court kept most centre passes with fantastic clearing and driving, bringing the ball down to the shooters.
Milligan shot 24 goals only missing six which is outstanding.
Goal defence Holly came up from 15’s and dominated her position with great turnovers.
Super proud of their efforts, a win is coming your way soon.
