A thrilling Round 5 encounter at Barkly Park Rutherglen saw Rutherglen and Tallangatta play out a dramatic draw, with both sides finishing on 10.10 (70).
In a game that ebbed and flowed, Rutherglen laid the foundation early with a spirited, team-first performance. The home side controlled the first half through cohesive ball movement and relentless pressure.
Midfielders Martin Brennan, Jett Peters, and Matt Tanner were instrumental in gaining early ascendancy around the contest.
Tanner, in particular, played a pivotal role with a defensive mindset, going head-to-head with former Morris Medallist Elliott Powell from the Ovens and Murray League.
Tanner’s disciplined, team-oriented approach kept Powell’s influence in check, laying the groundwork for Rutherglen to put themselves in a winning position.
His selfless efforts epitomised the team's focus on structure and accountability. Down back, Khris Willett and Jarryd Hatton were pillars of strength, repelling Tallangatta’s advances and providing calm under pressure. Michael Cooper, stationed at full forward, was another shining example of Rutherglen’s unselfish play.
Cooper’s team-first approach saw him create numerous scoring opportunities for teammates while also finishing off his own work with a few goals. His movement, pressure, and vision made him a constant threat inside 50. Despite Rutherglen’s dominance early, Tallangatta mounted a strong comeback in the second half, showing their class and fighting spirit to claw their way back into the contest.
With both sides trading blows in a tense final quarter, neither team could break the deadlock, and the game fittingly ended in a draw.
It was a contest full of character and high-level football, with Rutherglen’s selfless, disciplined effort earning them a share of the points.
Reserves
Cats 8.12.60 def Tallangatta 5.6.36
Coming off the team’s first loss the Reserves needed a fast start this week.
The midfield were on top early with a lot of forward 50 entries. Unfortunately, we didn’t capitalise on these opportunities, kicking 2.4- 1.0 in the first quarter.
In the second quarter the team played some really nice footy, but they couldn’t put them away on the scoreboard, going into halftime 4.8-1.0.
The Cats kicked straighter in the third quarter. The backline stood tall, putting on a lot of pressure on the Tallangatta forwards, making them miss their shots on goal. At three quarter time is was 7.8-2.5.
Tallangatta had a nice last quarter, but the Cats controlled the game in total to a run away win - 8.12.60 to 5.6.36

Under 17s
Cats 16.28.124 def Tallangatta 4.2.26
After the high of last week’s victory over KSC, the Rutherglen boys started a little slowly, lacking some of their usual polish.
However, this didn’t stop them from delivering a commanding first quarter, holding Tallangatta scoreless while piling on 5.7 themselves.
In a great show of sportsmanship, three Rutherglen players pulled on the green Tallangatta jumpers to help fill their team.
Each of them played admirably, helping ensure the game could go ahead with full numbers on both sides.
The second quarter saw a more competitive Tallangatta outfit, adding 3.1 to Rutherglen’s 4.4. Rutherglen’s backline, quiet early on, stood up well under pressure, and the team’s superior fitness began to show as they regained control of the match.
Despite continued inaccuracy in front of the goals, Rutherglen’s strong midfield and dominance in the centre gave them plenty of scoring opportunities.
The game also provided valuable experience for some of the younger and less seasoned players, who stepped up when needed.
Rutherglen continued to extend their lead throughout the second half, finishing with a comprehensive total of 16.28 (124) to Tallangatta’s 4.2 (26), securing a well-earned win.
Milestones: Congratulations to Ryan Barkley on his 50th club game. Welcome back to Jayden Arnold for the 2025 season.
Awards: Rutherglen Pizza – Logan Poole, Silver Key Café – Oliver Nash-Webster, Corowa Sportspower – Jax Ramsay, Coaches Award – Tyler Yeoman, Coaches Award – Liam Colvin.
Under 14s
Cats 5.8.38 def Tallangatta 1.1.7
The Cats were at home this week up against Tallangatta.
Tallangatta and Rutherglen were on the same number of wins for the season, so it promised to be a good contest with Rutherglen gaining some confidence from their win last week.
The opening quarter was a tight contest with pressure from both sides not allowing clean possession of the ball.
Neither team scored a goal in the first quarter and only one point separated them at quarter time.
In the second quarter Max Chandler and Codie Johnson both scored majors with good drive out of the centre from Nate Kuschert and Zavier Manns.
The defence was disciplined all day and didn’t allow a score from Tallangatta until the final quarter.
Jai Richey was a general in the backline supported by Elijah McFarlane.
Ryan Moore and Zac Macumber added some zip around the ball. Brayden McInnes had to battle hard all day to gain the ascendancy over the opposition ruckman.
Logan Hurley swapped to the forward line and showed some flair kicking two goals, and Ben Pagan Saunders scored one goal.
At the final siren, the Cats had recorded a 31-point win.
Next week the Cats are at home against the Wodonga Saints. Wodonga are in second position on the ladder, so it will be a tough game for the young Cats. Get down to the ground and support them as they push for another win at home.
