Rutherglen Cats put up a valiant effort but couldn't hold off Thurgoona in their senior football clash over the weekend.
With only a point separating the two sides in the first quarter, the Cats missed a few easy goals that could have given them an early lead. However, Thurgoona gradually took control and eased away from the young Cats side to secure a 20-point victory.
Despite the loss, there were some standout performances from the Rutherglen Cats. Jack Andison continued to show his class despite constant opposition pressure, while Sam Edmondson produced a classy performance from halfback with plenty of run.
The return of Ben Jones proved to be a game-changer for the Cats, with his defensive efforts proving to be immense throughout the game.
Jake Goddard had his best game for the club in seniors, continually winning clearances, while Brent Flannery turned back the clock to show he is not a spent force at senior level.
The return of Jack Holmes from basketball coaching duties allowed for more options with the Cats' taller brigade.
The highlight of the day was Lachie Webb's 50th game for the Cats. Webb, who was a late starter to the game but has shown bucket loads of potential, was honoured for his achievement.
James "Jimbo" Plummer also celebrated his 100th game for the club, having played for the Cats since he was 12 years old.
On a lighter note, the club president was left puzzled by the appearance of a fibreglass cow in his front yard on Saturday night.

Reserves
Rutherglen 1.3.9 to Thurgoona 20.14.134
The Rutherglen Cats reserves side suffered a tough defeat in their recent match, losing by a staggering 125 points. The game was an emotional rollercoaster for the team, with frustration, disappointment, and sadness being just a few of the emotions experienced by the players and supporters alike.
Despite many ins and outs, the Rutherglen Cats reserves fielded a full side. However, by the end of the game, they were left with only sixteen fit players due to general soreness and questionable fitness levels. Many players played under duress, which may have contributed to the loss.
The determination of the group has never been in question, and the side always represents their club with distinction, giving the supporters pride in their club. The returns this year of Brad Potter, Aaron Field, and Danny Johnson have been most welcome, and their on-field leadership has primed a few more early starters for senior debuts.
Hayden Weller also returned from injury for his first game of the year and settled in nicely. The solid form of Matthew Peacock and Eli Knight continued to push their names for senior selection, but an unfortunate hamstring tweak for Damo Thorpe will hinder his push for seniors.

Under 17s
Rutherglen 11.6.72 to Thurgoona 8.6.54
The under 17s remain undefeated after a bruising game against Thurgoona, with scores level with ten minutes left in the game a late flurry of goals saw the Cats win by eighteen points.
Quick out of the blocks the Cats couldn’t maintain the momentum and let Thurgoona gradually work their way back into the game and at stages looked like their first loss had arrived.
Cool under pressure Aidan Berriman and young gun Jack Ford hitting the score board on two occasions in their first year of 17s and Luke Nicholson kicking his first of two from fifty to start the ball rolling.
Big unit Angus Williams continued his good start to the season with three of his own while down back Lenny Hill, Jaydon Baldwin, Charlie Beattie and Fred Jackson defied the Thurgoona attack.
A welcome back to full fitness saw Charlie James impacting the game and the ever-confident Mitch Francis continue his fine entry into 17s football. After four rounds our 14s and 17s find themselves atop of the ladder, a fine start to the year.

Rutherglen 7.12.54 to Thurgoona 2.2.14
With a few out an easy win was still expected from the general supporters however to Thurgoona’s credit they gave the undefeated Cats boys a run for their money.
With a very tight first quarter the boys gradually wore the determined opposition down. The smooth-running Flynn Verhulst was at his absolute best with possessions at will, Aiden Waycott produced his best performance for the club to date at centre halfback, stopping many forward thrusts.
Tommy Kaf, Logan Poole and big Bill Lindon controlled the middle of the ground allowing the big forwards in Dusty Fisher, Bryce Moloney and Jai Nicholson plenty of opportunities.
The Cats remain atop the ladder and face another undefeated side on Saturday in Dederang Mt-Beauty.

A hard-fought game against an older Thurgoona side showed the grit that the young Cats have, never shirking a contest for the entire game.
While the score was not in the Cats favour the game was an even contest with many forward entries for little reward.
The only downside for the week was the Achilles injury to coaching staff member Brett Chandler while training with the lads on Monday night, how the once mighty have fallen.

Great game by the girls taking on a very strong, physical offense in Thurgoona. Lexi played a blinder producing some integral turnovers through the mid court.
Kaity dug deep as always, fighting for every ball with Jasmine standing tall in goals, finding more confidence each week.
Defence was well covered with Acacia and Izzy fighting hard to hold off a much taller opposition. Keep up the great work girls.
