However as the game progressed, Yackandandah’s experience and cleaner ball use gave them the edge in the contest.
Skill errors from Rutherglen led to turnovers, putting consistent pressure on their defenders throughout the second half.
Despite the result, there were some encouraging individual performances for the visitors.
Co-coach Dylan Van Berlo worked hard in the ruck and across half-back, while Martin Brennan and James Tanner contributed well through the midfield and forward line.
Rory Beattie continued to show promise, Angus Williams provided a target at centre half-forward in his second game, and Lucas Tafft was reliable in defence.

Under 17s
Cats 6.10: 46 def by Roos 10.4: 64
A frosty but sunny morning welcomed the Under 17s to Yackandandah for a spirited contest.
Rutherglen came out strong in the first quarter, and had taken a commanding lead while restricting Yackandandah to only one goal.
However, momentum gradually shifted as the match wore on.
Despite showing glimpses of strong teamwork early, the Under 17s found it difficult to maintain focus and stick to the game plan in the second half.
In a scoreless final quarter, Yackandandah took full advantage, dominating possession and capitalising on their opportunities.
A lack of communication and cohesion on the ground made it hard for Rutherglen to disrupt Yack’s forward entries.
Their ability to link up cleanly and apply scoreboard pressure proved decisive.
Mitch Francis led admirably as captain, showcasing courage and determination.
Consistent contributions came from Harry Chandler, Baylee Morton, Flynn Verhulst, Lukas Moore, and Dusty Fisher, providing solid support across the ground.
While the result didn’t go Rutherglen’s way, the match provided valuable learning opportunities.
The strong first quarter showed what the team is capable of when playing with intensity and structure.
With continued focus on communication and teamwork, the Under 17s are well-placed to bounce back stronger next week in what should be another close contest at Dederang.
Awards: Rutherglen Pizza – Mitch Francis, Silver Key Café – Harry Chandler, Corowa Sportspower – Baylee Morton, Coaches Award – Lukas Moore, Coaches Award – Flynn Verhulst.

With Rutherglen in fifth place on the ladder and Yackandandah in third, it promised to be a close match up.
The young Cats got the jump on their opposition and started strongly in the first quarter.
Brayden McInnes performed well in the ruck, and Noah Cracknell was dominant through the centre of the ground.

In the second quarter Ben Pagan-Saunders scored a goal and was well supported by Zac Saville in the forward line, and drive through the centre from Ryan Moore and Seve Cottam.
Elijah McFarlane and Jai Richey did a magnificent job in defence and contributed to Yack being unable to score a goal in the first half.
In the third quarter Yack had more of the play and peppered the goals but were unable to convert a major which left Rutherglen going into three quarter time with a 25-point lead.

Under 12s
Cats 0.0:0 def by Roos 2.1:13
This week the Under 12s travelled to a frosty Yackandandah to take on a very strong top of the ladder opponent. The young Cats brought the heat right from the start with excellent tackle pressure and pressure around the ball. Yackandandah kicked the first goal of the game late in the first quarter, from there it would be a battle of the backlines.
Both sides did not give an inch in a real arm wrestle, with Yackandandah eventually running out winners in a low scoring game.
What a mighty effort from the young Cats, well done.
