Round 6 of the Tallangatta and District Football Netball League saw Rutherglen Cats host Beechworth Bushrangers at Barkly Park with a massive local crowd greeted to another perfect autumn day.
Both sides came out firing determined to get an early lead. It was a hotly contested first quarter especially around the midfield led by Reed Bonat and Matt Tanner with plenty of stoppages resulting in two goals apiece going into the first break.
From then on, the Cats found it difficult to score with only two more goals kicked for the day despite Jyda House looking threatening every time the ball went into his vicinity.
Rutherglen’s backline held up well all day despite being under siege at times. Bennett Thomas stepping up for his first senior game of the year was instrumental in organising with voice and didn’t get beaten one on one all day.
With plenty of positives and areas of improvement to address and work on through the week we turn our attention to Dederang next week as the Cats senior side look to find that elusive second win of the season.
Award Winners: Poachers Paradise Hotel – Matt Tanner, Complete Body Craft – Bennett Thomas, Club Corowa – Jyda House, Rutherglen Pizza – Ben Jones, Boorhaman Hotel – Caleb Andison.

Cats 7-8-50 def Beechworth 5-12-42
Despite illness and injuries Rutherglen were able to hold off a strong Beechworth team in another closely contested game.
The five goals to none kicked by Rutherglen in the second quarter made all the difference in the end, giving the team a buffer to hold off a strong finishing Beechworth.
At times the forward and back line for Rutherglen were on top but inconsistency and inaccuracy on Beechworth’s part enabled the team to stay on top of the game and take the win.
Three goals to Ethan Gregor, one goal each to Flynn Verhulst and Lincoln Barnes with Dusty Fisher coming up from the Under 14s and contributing with two goals.
Thanks to all of the Under 14s players who ably filled the vacancies this week. Best players were Mitch Francis, Aidan Berriman, Ethan Gregor, Archer Colvin, Liam Bulmer, and Harry Chandler.
Award Winners: Rutherglen Pizza – Dusty Fisher, Silver Key Café – Ethan Gregor, Corowa Sportspower – Archer Colvin, Coaches Award – Charlie Poole, Coaches Award – Liam Bulmer.

Cats 7-8-50 def Beechworth 2-4-16
The Under 14s Cats faced some tough opposition in the Beechworth Bushrangers at Barkly Park.
Aiden Sibraa and Dustin Fisher were strong through the midfield and Aiden slotted through two valuable goals in a tight contest.
Callum Potter worked hard pushing into the forward line and kicked two goals.
Ben Pagan-Saunders was shifted to full forward and had his best game of the season, providing a good target and kicking a goal.
Nash Eloy was busy around the forward line providing support to his teammates.
Only five points separated both teams at half time, however in the second half the Cats managed to break the shackles with Jax Ramsey and Aaron Lewis-Carmichael wrestling some dominance from the centre breaks.
The final margin didn’t reflect how tough the match was and will hold the boys in good stead as the season progresses.
Next week at home versus Dederang Mount Beauty should be a good one, so come on down and support the team.
Award Winners: Rutherglen Pizza – Aiden Sibraa, Silver Key Café – Ben Pagan-Saunders, Corowa Cougars – Aaron Lewis-Carmichael, Secret Cat – Dusty Fisher, Boschetti Electrical – Callum Potter.

Award Winners: Best On Court – Bylee Allison, Poachers Paradise Hotel – Tahni Evans, Grace.bar+eatery – Kayla Harrison.
This week the girls began strong, their connection into the attacking end of court was meaningful and they took advantage of their opportunities as they were presented. Their consistency across the full 60 minutes is improving each week largely due to the lift in intensity from everyone on the court.

Award Winners: Best On Court – Pia Taylor, Grace.bar+eatery – Emma Prescott, Caffeine N Machine – Abbie Hetherington.
The girls played a much-improved game this week, showing tamed aggression at the ball and going down by their smallest margin to date. The backline worked well together managing to repel many of the Bushie’s attacks. Our shooters were making the most of their chances and finished off the great work from everyone on the court. Thanks to the cheering from the sidelines, it certainly helps!

Award Winners: Club – Lucy James, Sportspower Corowa – Elle Jordan.
Unfortunately, the girls started slowly this week which allowed the Bushies to gain a decent lead from the first half. After a few changes they came out and played a much improved and solid team effort in the second half, almost matching it with Beechworth. Keep up the intensity girls and the improvement will follow.

This one hurt us, the girls led all day but Beechworth in the last quarter never gave up and with a few errors from our girls came back to defeat us. The fire is now fueled, and we are ready for next week – a win we are sure is not too far around the corner.
