Corowa RSL Bowls Club has made history by appointing its first-ever coach, Scott Widdison.
This landmark decision not only marks a significant milestone for the club but also sets a rare precedent within the Ovens & Murray bowls community, as paid coaches are a rarity in this region.
Scott, a seasoned bowler at the age of 40, follows in the footsteps of his father Ken, who introduced him to the sport two decades ago.
With an impressive Premiership win at the Corowa Civic Bowls Club under his belt, Scott signed a contract at the Corowa RSL Bowls Club last week, setting the stage for the upcoming 2023-24 bowls season.
“The opportunity came up, and I thought, why not take the club somewhere they haven't been before?” he said.
“I'm thrilled to be part of a club that is actively seeking progress and growth. With the support of the committee and the enthusiasm of the members, I'm confident that we can achieve great things together.”
The appointment of a coach has been in the works for the past year, according to club president Keith Mills, with Jordan Thornton, the Chair of Selection, playing a vital role in securing Scott for the position. Jordan expressed his delight in having someone as passionate as Scott leading the coaching team.
“We are excited to have someone as passionate and experienced as Scott leading our coaching team,” Jordan told the Free Press.
“His dedication to the sport and impressive track record makes him the perfect fit for this role. Not only will the A1’s will benefit, but all the members will too.”
President Keith Mills said it was a real coup to welcome Scott.
“On behalf of the entire Corowa RSL Bowls Club, I want to extend a warm welcome to Scott,” he said.
“We have been eagerly anticipating the opportunity to bring a coach on board for the past year. I am confident that under Scott’s guidance, our players will flourish and achieve remarkable success.”
Keith said the club is entering an exciting phase of development particularly after the recent announcement that the committee voted to accept a promotion from A2 to A1 spot in Weekend Pennant. This promotion comes as Wodonga Bowls Club declined their automatic promotion to A1, granting Corowa RSL Bowls Club the opportunity to return to A1 bowls once again.
Corowa RSL Bowls Club has been actively striving to become more proactive and progressive in recent times. Their successful social bowls events, including the popular Barefoot Bowls, have gained significant traction. The club has also been dedicated to maintaining their greens to a high standard and has hosted various social groups, parties, and special events, such as toga parties, wedding parties, and baby showers.
Recent improvements to the club's facilities include the installation of new blinds to protect against inclement weather, and plans are underway to introduce synthetic grass around the greens to assist volunteers with maintenance. The acquisition of bowls kits for barefoot bowls is also on the club's agenda.
Moreover, the club has secured a five-year tenure with the Corowa RSL Club, solidifying their stability and long-term prospects.
These positive changes have led to a significant increase in membership, which has risen from 60 in June 2022 to over 90 at present.
“The club prides itself on being a family-oriented establishment, attracting members spanning a wide age range from their 20s to their 90s,” acting secretary and committee member Lynne Mills said.
With the 2023/24 pennant season commencing in October, the club is gearing up to field at least four weekend teams, including the highly anticipated A1 team, as well as three or four midweek teams.
For those who prefer a more relaxed bowling experience, the club organises two regular Social Bowls days every week, offering a chance to enjoy the sport and socialise.
Additionally, Corowa High School students actively participate in bowls through the school’s sports program every Wednesday, fostering a strong connection between the club and the local community.
With the appointment of Scott Widdison as coach and their recent achievements and improvements, Corowa RSL Bowls Club is poised for a successful and promising future, building upon their legacy and welcoming new members and visitors to their vibrant bowling community.
