As the club’s handicapper, alongside the many other roles he performs, Darren may soon have to significantly adjust his own rating following a string of outstanding performances in recent weeks.
The Bruce Bond Trophy is an annual event honouring Bruce’s significant contribution to the club as a player, committee member, and long-serving secretary.
This year’s competition was played in a best-of-three frame format, with qualifying matches held on Monday and Tuesday, March 16 and 17, and the final on Monday, March 23.
Darren faced Michael Barclay in the final, after Michael secured his place with a dramatic three-frame black-ball re-spot victory over Wayne Rogers.
Michael had also shown strong form leading into the final, having defeated Darren during the club’s social night on Wednesday, March 18.
The final proved to be a thrilling contest. Darren played excellent snooker to take the opening frame, but Michael responded strongly to claim the second, forcing a deciding frame.
Michael led into the colours before Darren showed great determination to draw level.
A brilliant double on the pink from Michael left both players chasing the black for victory. Each had opportunities, with several near misses, but Darren ultimately prevailed with a superb long pot to secure the title. It was a fantastic match and a credit to both players.
Special mention also goes to Rick Conomy, who refereed the final and has now firmly established himself as the club’s official match overseer for future events.
In other action, Ashley Nicholls and Kevin Young defeated Rick Conomy and Sai Naidu in a doubles match held during the club’s social evening on March 25.
The doubles format was introduced due to a large number of participants, and the night also featured the notable grandmother-and-grandson pairing of Shirley Ridley and Luca Macheda.
