A brilliant one over par final round of 74 by Cody Cuthbert meant a thrilling one shot victory and becoming Corowa’s 2024 men’s champion last Sunday week.
The one-handicapper trailed the club’s operations manager Nathan Thomas, off plus three, by one stroke after the first round and three strokes going into the last round.
But Cuthbert’s 74 to a 78 carded by Thomas resulted in a come from behind win by the barest of margins.
Women’s A Grade winner Jeanette with men’s captain Phil Willcoxson and women’s representative Kellie Cunningham.
Claiming his first club champion title with scores of 76, 75, 79 and 74 for an overall 12 over par 304 on the Par 73 East Course, the 24-year-old bar tender in St Kilda who plays at, including pennant, for Commonwealth was rapt to win his first Corowa club championship.
“Corowa’s like a home away from home for me – my father (Brett) grew up in Corowa and my grandfather (Kevin) lives there,” he told The Free Press from Melbourne.
“To win the title, yes, I was pretty rapt. Nathan was very good throughout the whole tournament. Trent played really well too.”
It wasn’t until the tenth hole the eventual winner hit the lead, by one stroke. That lead extended to two but a bogey on the 16th, however, saw the lead revert to one stroke. Leading by one, with a two-footer to sink on the 18th to be champion, seemed a little longer. But it went in.
Good crowds followed the men’s and women’s club championships.
Cuthbert praised the course’s condition, “especially after all the floods we had”.
In third place, just a further stroke back from Thomas, with a total of 306, was Trent Vonax who was the only player in the field to shoot a sub par round, that being a 72 on the second day.
Jeanette Edwards played close to her handicap of eight throughout her three rounds of 84, 82 and 82 for a total of 248 to win the club’s women’s championship by 10 strokes from Margaret Tobin with 89, 86 and 83 totalling 258.
Last year’s club champion defended her title in fine style on the pristine-looking championship course.
Sixteen-year-old Oliver Nelson was junior champion, with scores of 81,75,80 and 74 for a 310 total. On 318, in second place, was Beau Davis with rounds of 78,76,82 and 82.
Kai Tafft improved each round to finish third; his four scores being 100, 94, 93 and 90 equalling 377.
