The Roo's kids played Wodonga Raiders Red at home on Sunday.
They came out strong in the first quarter with midfielders George, Ollie, Blair and Franco continually pumping the ball into the forward 50. Playing his eighth game for the week, Jagger was able to get on the end of a few and kicked two first quarter goals.
The second term was similar with the Roos controlling possession. The Raiders kids were putting pressure on and restricted the home team to one goal. Lucas took a contested clunk at the top of the goal square and kicked truly, and the team went into half time with a three-goal buffer.
The second half was a little more even on the scoreboard despite us having the majority of the play. The backline stood up, led by Will and Rydah. Some of our bottom aged players in Max Tull, Jobe and Billy Witherden started getting their hands on the footy more regularly which is a great sign for the rest of the season.
Franco and Billy Hunter were again tackling like maniacs and made it impossible for the Raiders players to get quality possessions. Ollie was in everything as was Blair who kicked two goals, and Sonny looked dangerous all match.
The side is coming together really well and will give themselves opportunity in all of their remaining matches.
Coach Wizza addressed the team after the match and presented the awards and said that it was really difficult to leave players out as it was a terrific team effort as the 5-5-35 to 2-1-13 scoreline suggested.
Awards: Oliver Oberin, Franco Moolman, Jagger Doody, Sonny Carpenter, Lucas Tait, Max Tull.
Under 14s
Corowa Vs North Albury
Sunday’s game was an important one for the Under 14 Roos as they looked to establish themselves as one of the top teams in the competition. Having claimed a big win against the Hoppers last week, the boys were conscious of not getting ahead of themselves, prioritising a team game over individual flare.
North albury jumped out of the gates and managed to sneak an early goal, however, it was all Corowa from that point. The first half saw a lot of free-flowing football as the boys showed off their skills with the ball, kicking six goals in the first half as the Hoppers could muster just one more in reply.
Again, the message from the coaches was teamwork and commitment and the boys came out firing, limiting the opportunities for the Hoppers to move the ball forward. The half-back line was as efficient as ever, and the ball was fed through for a further 6 goals in the second half.
The coaches commented on the effort from all the players this week, an effort that will surely help them compete against the stronger teams in the competition.
Final score: Corowa 12.3.75 defeated North Albury 2.3.15
Played at John Foord Oval in perfect conditions it was the Roo’s that got the jump on the Pigeon’s in the first term outscoring the opposition 3 goals to zip.
The second term saw the Roo’s extend their lead with another 3 goals to the Pigeons 1. Emmett and Noah proving to be handful in the air, marking well and delivering with accuracy.
Yarrawonga turned up the pressure in the third quarter which gave them a lift in a much tighter contest with the Roo’s kicking 3 goals to Yarra’s 2.
The final quarter started much the same as the third with good pressure around the ball from both teams, however it wasn’t long before the Roo Boys found the form and started to power away with slick ball movement, power running and a solid defense, outscoring Yarra 5 goals to 2 in the last term.
Final score Corowa Rutherglen 14.13.97, Yarrawonga 5.9.39
